San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Three Rancho Cucamonga pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Quakes earned their second straight victory over the Giants with a 4-1 win on Sunday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose suffered their fourth consecutive loss on the homestand as their second half record dropped to 7-11.
Dan Burkhart (1-for-3, HR, RBI) provided the only Giants offense in the defeat with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. San Jose did not record a hit over the last four innings.
Rancho Cucamonga starter Andres Santiago (5-3) picked-up the win after registering 10 strikeouts over seven dominant innings of work. The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits with two walks during his stint on the mound.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Quakes struck for four runs against Giants starter Seth Rosin. Leon Landry started the frame by drawing a walk before Joc Pederson grounded a single into left to put runners on the corners with none out. C.J. Retherford was up next and he blasted the first pitch of the at-bat over the fence in left for a three-run homer and a 3-0 Rancho Cucamonga lead. Three batters later, Bobby Coyle connected for a solo homer to left for a 4-0 advantage.
Rosin (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year despite throwing a season-high six innings. He allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Rosin held the Quakes off the scoreboard over the first three innings facing the minimum nine hitters. The right-hander tossed a 1-2-3 top of the first before Angelo Songco led off the second with a single off the wall in right. Rosin though induced the next hitter, Christopher O'Brien, to bounce into a double play before Coyle grounded out. Rosin then set down the Quakes in order the next inning.
After Rancho Cucamonga took the lead in the fourth, Rosin struck out two in a perfect top of the fifth. The Quakes collected three singles against Rosin in the sixth, but were unable to score in the frame. The Giants picked-up their first hit of the contest in the bottom of the third when Jarrett Parker led off with a double into the left center field gap. Parker though was stranded at second when Santiago retired the next three hitters as Burkhart struck out, Carter Jurica popped out and Ryan Lollis lined out to second.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Burkhart crushed a solo homer to deep right bringing San Jose to within 4-1. The home run was Burkhart's second of the season. Jurica followed with a single, but Santiago recovered to strikeout Lollis ending the inning.
Santiago finished his night by setting down the last seven batters that he faced, including three strikeouts in a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. Rancho Cucamonga reliever Steve Smith then induced three straight groundouts in a perfect bottom of the eighth to maintain the 4-1 lead. In the ninth, Quakes closer Eric Eadington issued a two-out walk to Adam Duvall, but Ricky Oropesa followed by striking out on three pitches to end the game. Prior to Duvall reaching base, Rancho Cucamonga pitchers had combined to retire 12 straight Giants hitters.
Eadington was credited with his second save of the series and 14th of the season.
