Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Syracuse, NY - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and Buffalo Bisons traded punches the entire night. But, like a great heavyweight fight, somebody had to win. The Bisons overcame an early 5-1 deficit to win the series opener 7-6 at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, New York on Saturday night.

The Bisons struck first in the top half of the first inning. Adam Loewen roped a double to centerfield, bringing home Josh Rodriguez and giving Buffalo the early 1-0 advantage in the ballgame. The Bisons lead didn't last long as Ronnier Mustelier roped a home run over the right field wall to knot the game at 1-1 after one inning of play.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense awoke in the home half of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Jack Cust sent a line drive two-RBI single out into right field, plating Doug Bernier and Chris Dickerson. Later in the third, Ronnier Mustelier trotted in from third on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Brandon Laird. After the three run third inning, the Yankees lead grew to 4-1.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Chris Dickerson roped an RBI single right back up the middle, extending the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to 5-1. However, The Bisons made things interesting in the top half of the sixth inning when Chris dan Decker demolished a home run way over the left-centerfield wall off of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher Ramon Ortiz. It was his fifth home run of the season and brought the Buffalo to within 5-4 heading into the home half of the inning.

The Bisons came all the way back to tie the game and eventually take the lead in the seventh. With Ramon Ortiz out of the game the Yankees turned to right-handed reliever Chase Whitley. The Bisons loaded the bases against Whitley in the seventh and Loewen drew a walk, allowing Raul Reyes to jog in as the tying run. Buffalo then took a 6-5 lead when Josh Satin hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Lucas May. However, the Yankees came right back in home half of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6 on a Cust RBI double down the left field line. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre catcher Francisco Cervelli then grounded into an inning ending double play and the teams headed to the eighth with the score knotted at 6-6.

Buffalo took the lead in the top half of the eighth when pinch hitter Brad Emaus roped an RBI single past Ramiro Pena at third, plating Valentino Pascucci and giving the Bisons the 7-6 advantage in the eighth. The Yankees failed to overcome the late Buffalo rally, dropping the series opener 7-6.

Ortiz was credited with the no decision for the Yankees. The veteran right-hander allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits. He struck out six and walked just one. Left-hander Garrett Olson suffered the no decision for the Bisons. He tossed four innings allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking a pair. Whitley got the loss for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre falling to 3-3 on the season. While, Josh Edgin got the win and Justin Hampson earned the save for the Bisons.
