JetHawks Rally in Ninth to Avoid Sweep
July 7, 2012 - California League (CalL) Lancaster JetHawks
LANCASTER, CA - Friday night was "Go Green Night" at The Hangar and the JetHawks decided to conserve most of their energy for the final inning. Lancaster scored five runs over the final three frames, including three in the bottom of the ninth, to come from behind and beat the Visalia Rawhide, 6-5.Jonathan Meyer's shallow fly ball to right field dropped in allowing Domingo Santana to score from second to break a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the ninth. The JetHawks rushed out of the dugout and celebrated near first as they avoided a sweep and snapped a three game losing streak.
Up 5-3 going in the bottom of the ninth, the Rawhide turned to DJ Johnson (1-1) who had tossed a perfect ninth in the first game of the series to pick up his third save. Grant Hogue beat out a ground ball to second base to lead off the inning and George Springer followed with a single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
With one out, Santana worked a full count before driving a ball off the left field fence to score both runners and tie the game. After an intentional walk to Chris Epps, Meyer picked up the game winning hit.
The JetHawks trailed 5-1 after the sixth inning and scored runs in the seventh and eighth to get closer. Ben Orloff picked up a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Meyer drove in a run with a groundball base hit to left field in the eighth.
Jose Trinidad (8-3) kept the team close, tossing three scoreless - and hitless - innings of relief to pick up his team-leading eighth win of the season. The four run deficit is the largest the JetHawks have overcome in a victory this season.
Visalia jumped starter Nick Tropeano in his first start at home. The Rawhide scored three runs - two earned - in the first inning. Mike Freeman picked up two runs with a double and Jon Griffin scored another on a Tropeano wild pitch, the first of his four wild pitches on the night.
Yazy Arbelo was responsible for the other two Rawhide runs. The designated hitter launched two solo home runs off Tropeano. Tropeano left after allowing five runs - four earned - on seven hits with three strikeouts over six innings.
Erik Castro gave Lancaster a run in the bottom of the first with his 12th home run of the season off starter Ray Hernandez. Hernandez settled down to put together one of his best starts of the season. The right-hander gave up two runs and struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings.
The JetHawks (6-10, 43-43) continue their home stand on Saturday night as they start a three game series with the Stockton Ports. Tyson Perez will start against Sean Murphy. First pitch is 7:00 pm.
Saturday night is "Shirt Off Your Back Night". The JetHawks will wear their Fourth of July uniforms and fans will have the opportunity to bid on the jerseys.
