July 6, 2012 - Eastern League (EL) Trenton Thunder
(Trenton, NJ) - Vidal Nuño struck out a season-high ten batters in six innings and Trenton pounded out 15 hits as the Thunder defeated the New Britain Rock Cats, 7-1, to salvage a game in the three-game series in front of 4,137 fans at Waterfront Park. Jeff Farnham and Jose Pirela homered for Trenton (49-37), which retains its lead in first place in the Eastern Division and still has not been swept in a series this season.Nuño (4-1) allowed a leadoff home run to New Britain's Aaron Hicks to begin the game, then shut down the Rock Cats for six innings. His ten punch-outs represented the most for any Thunder pitcher in a game this season, and he allowed only three hits and one walk.
The Thunder jumped on New Britain starter Aaron Thompson (3-3) for four runs and 11 hits in Thompson's six innings of work. David Adams and Luke Murton picked up RBI hits in the first to give Trenton the lead 2-1, then Adams' run-scoring double in the third pushed the Thunder ahead by two.
Farnham drilled his first Eastern League home run with two outs in the sixth, a long blast to deep left that made the score 4-1. Pirela's solo shot in the eighth against reliever Daniel Turpen added the seventh Trenton tally.
Zoilo Almonte collected four hits on the night for the Thunder, while Adams had three hits and a walk. Pirela, Farnham and Shane Brown each had a pair of knocks. Trenton pitchers Nuño and Danny Farquhar combined to strike out 14 Rock Cats, a Thunder season-high in one game.
The Thunder and Portland Sea Dogs begin a three-game series Saturday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Trenton All-Star right-hander Brett Marshall (9-3, 3.21) is slated to start against righty Jeremy Kehrt (2-2, 5.59).
