Lynchburg Hillcats Game Notes

July 3, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Lynchburg Hillcats

WINSTON-SALEM DASH (49-32, 5-7) vs LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (45-37, 6-6)

July 3rd, 2012 -- 7:05 PM

Calvin Falwell Field at Lynchburg City Stadium

RHP Justin Collop (6-2, 4.07) vs LHP Chris Masters (0-3, 5.73)

THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats split a doubleheader with the Winston-Salem Dash, dropping game one 5-4 and winning game two 5-2...Lynchburg held a 4-1 lead in game one heading into the sixth inning, when Dash OF Trayce Thompson hit his second homer of the game, a three-run shot to tie the score 4-4...Then, in extra innings the Dash scored a run in the top of the eighth and held on to win 5-4...Game two saw the 'Cats take the early lead once again, on top 4-0 after two innings...RHP Cody Martin tossed five innings for Lynchburg, giving up just one run on four hits while strking out eight and earned the win...The Hillcats are now 6-6 in the second half and in second place in the Northern Division...

VS. WINSTON-SALEM: Lynchburg is against the Dash this season...The Hillcats took two of three at home 5/11-13, and the Dash took two of three in Winston-Salem 5/18-20...Both clubs have clinched playoff spots in September already...The 'Cats won the first half in the Northern Division, while the Dash did the same for the Southern Division...

COMEBACK VICTIMS: The Hillcats are 39-4 when leading after seven innings this season...Four losses is tied for the most in the league with the Frederick Keys (28-4)...The Keys currently own a league-worst record 32-50...It didn't add to the stat, but the Hillcats led 4-1 after five innings in a seven-inning game last night, but went on to lose 5-4 in extras...Winston-Salem is still 0-26 when trailing after seven innings this year, but essentially that's the style comeback they had last night in the sixth of a seven-inning contest...Lynchburg and Frederick are the only other teams in the league winless when trailing after seven...

NOW OR NEVER: That seems to be the sentiment when the Hillcats are nearing the end of regulation innings...After last night's extra inning loss in game one, the Hillcats are 1-4 in games needing additional frames...That is the worst mark in the circuit...

IN..CREDIBLE, PHE..NOMENAL: OF David Rohm 'is burning'...Went 2-for-5 in the doubleheader last night, notching a hit in each game...He is now on a season-high five game hitting streak, batting .375 (6-for-16)...Has two doubles, and RBI, and two runs scored in that stretch...Prior to the streak, his average was at .207, lowest since he was hitting .200 four games into the season...Raised his season clip 19 points, to .226 in the last five games...

SCANNED MY CAT: 2B Tommy La Stella was plunked in the head last Wednesday and left the game... After missing three games in Wilmington over the weekend, he returned to the lineup last night in game one...La Stella was deemed unresponsive for about ten seconds after his helmet was knocked off last week, and wasn't cleared to play until yesterday...Went 0-for-3 in his return and left after five innings...

HILLCATS MONTHLY: The Hillcats hit .243 in June, averaging 3.17 runs per game...The pitching carried them, boasting a 2.65 ERA, best in the league for the month...The 'Cats went 16-13 in June, making it their third-straight winning month...They went 15-14 in May, batting .250 with a 3.66 ERA...They averaged 3.97 runs per game that month...April was by far their best offensive month...They hit .294, best in the the league, while five of the eight teams hit .254 or worse...The pitching had it's worst month with a 4.14 ERA but the team went 13-9 as the bats put up 5.72 runs per game...C Evan Gattis hit .385 that month with nine home runs with 29 RBI...He was called up before the first game in May...

THE DECISION: RHP Cody Martin won his eighth game of the season last night, and is now tied for the league lead in wins with teammates RHP Gus Schlosser and RHP J.R. Graham, as well as Wisnton-Salem RHP Matt Heidenreich...Martin is now 8-6...His 14 decisions are the most for any pitcher in the Carolina league...Martin gave up just one run in five innings last night, and now owns the eighth-best ERA in league at 3.31...His six losses lead the Hillcats, but gets the worst run-support of any starter on the team with more than four starts...The Hillcats, who average 4.17 runs per game score only 3.46 on average in games Martin starts...

TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Justin Collop was selected in the sixth round of the 2009 draft by the White Sox out of the University of Toledo...Never posted an ERA lover than 5.33 in three years of college, but his control, make-up, and bevy of pitches made him appealing to the White Sox...Throws a two-seam fastball, slider, change-up, and split-finger pitch...Debuted with Short-season Great Falls in 2009...Went 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 15 games, 7 starts...Went to Low-A Kannapolis in 2010...Went 9-12 with a 4.26 ERA...Tied for the team-high with 26 starts..Tied the league lead in complete games (3), third in innings pitched (154.1), tied for fourth in strikeouts (130), and tied for fourth in losses...Started last year with Winston-Salem...Went 2-3 with a 4.17 ERA in 15 games, 6 starts...Missed all of July, and returned in the second week of August with Kannapolis, where he finished the year 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA in six appearances...This season he is 6-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 18 games, 5 starts...Made his first start of the season against Lynchburg May 19...Gave up two runs in four innings and took a no-decision...
