Sharks Routed at HomeJuly 2, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) Wilmington Sharks
The early portion of the game sped by, with the only runs through the first four innings coming in the second. Each team scored one in that frame, with the SwampDogs' score counting as unearned due to a pair of errors. Lloyd Enzor hit the first of his two doubles in the bottom half, then scored after an Alex Freedman groundout and a Jeff May single.
Moving to the fifth inning, a pair of hits plus a walk and a fielder's choice allowed Fayetteville to plate two more runs. The second of those ended up as the game winner, as Wilmington could only score one more run off of SwampDogs starter Danny Smith.
Even that second run came with some help by the `Dogs defense in the eighth, counting as unearned when Casey Goss should have been thrown out on a fielder's choice but was able to stay as the throw to knock him off the basepaths took the second baseman off the bag. Goss later scored on a double by Scott Coleman, the left fielder's only hit.
In the seventh and eighth innings, the SwampDogs used extra base hits to put runners in scoring position and were able to scratch both Joe Ciamacco and Reed Harper across following their respective double and triple. Headed to the ninth, the game was still in reach with a 5-2 score.
Smith finished his outing after eight innings, over which he allowed just two runs (one earned) on six hits and a single walk with three strikeouts.
However, the Sharks defense made some costly errors in the top of the ninth that allowed the visitors to score a total of five runs. Three of those were recorded as unearned, with all being charged to reliever Chris Thomas. A Ciamocco single started the frame, and he scored his third run of the contest when Tyler Ding knocked the team's second triple of the night. Following the three-bagger, a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. All three of those runners scored, plus one more to give the SwampDogs a 10-2 lead that would eventually be the final as the Sharks went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.
In all, five of the six Fayetteville batters who recorded hits ended the contest with at least two base knocks. The team finished with a total of 12 base hits.
