Trinidad Tosses Seven Scoreless for Win
June 29, 2012 - California League (CalL) Lancaster JetHawks
LANCASTER, CA - When JetHawks workhorse Ruben Alaniz needed a rest, the team called upon reliever Jose Trinidad and he did not disappoint. The right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings and got plenty of offensive help in a 10-3 win against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at The Hangar on Thursday night.Trinidad (7-3), who was making just his third start and his first since May 11, gave up seven hits and only one extra base hit en route to picking up his team-high seventh win. He also lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.95.
Alaniz, who leads the league with 93 1/3 innings pitched, went on the disabled list after the game with shoulder soreness. The move is retroactive to June 26 and he is not expected to miss another start. His replacement on Thursday night worked quickly, consistently threw first pitch strikes and got plenty of help from his offense.
Erik Castro launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, his 11th of the season, to give the JetHawks an early lead against Quakes starter Andres Santiago (3-3). Domingo Santana followed the homer with a double and scored on a Jonathan Meyer base hit to give Lancaster an early 3-0 lead.
They added two more in the fourth inning. Rafael Valenzuela led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on a Ben Orloff base hit. Rene Garcia would later score on a wild pitch after being hit by a pitch and moving to third on a George Springer single.
In the sixth, Springer drove in Garcia with a single and Orloff scored on a Santana sacrifice fly to give the team a 7-0 lead.
They made it 9-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Meyer led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an Enrique Hernandez single. Hernandez later scored on an error by shortstop Alexi Aguilar.
Brian Streileing relieved Trinidad to start the eighth inning and would finish the game. He allowed three runs on five hits in his two innings of work. C.J. Retherford picked up an RBI with a double in the eighth and Chris Jacobs drove in two runs with a single in the ninth.
In the bottom of the eighth Telvin Nash hit a solo home run, his league-high 21st of the season, on a 3-0 pitch against reliever Eammon Portice. Nash had gone 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in his first four plate appearances.
The winning team has now scored 10 or more runs in 12 of 13 games at The Hangar in the month of June.
The JetHawks (2-6, 39-39) will take on the Quakes (2-6, 39-39) on Friday night for game two of the three game series at The Hangar. David Martinez (2-3, 5.54) is scheduled to start against Garrett Gould (1-6, 5.13). First pitch is at 7:00 pm. It will be Super Hero Night with a fireworks show to follow the game.
