Cane Cutters Lose Hard Fought Game against AcesJune 20, 2012 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL) Acadiana Cane Cutters
The Aces opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. David Zorn grounded out to second base scoring Doug Votolato to give the Aces the 1-0 lead. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Styker Brown drew a four pitch walk that brought home Zach Rodgers.
The Cane Cutters followed up the two-run second inning by the Aces with their own two-run third inning. The first three batters of the inning, Mike Barba, Isaac Rodriguez and Mitchell Nau, all got on base by the way of a walk and two singles that loaded the bases. Two batters later, Ladd Rhodes grounded out to third base that brought home Barba. Rodriguez scored later on in the inning to tie the game at 2-2.
The Aces took the lead once again in the top of the fifth inning. Their first three batters got on base by the way of a walk and two singles. Garrett Vail comes up as the next batter and hits a fly ball to centerfield to bring home Brown and advance Jami Rachal to third. Votolato comes up next and hits into a fielder's choice to score Rachal. The runs ended there and the Aces now lead 4-2.
The Cane Cutters once again came through to tie the ball game up in the top of the seventh inning. Gabe Woods comes up to bat with two runners on at first and second base and hits a single that scores Adam Seal and also scores Ladd Rhodes on an error by the first baseman. The Aces grabbed the lead in the game for the third time by scoring one in the bottom of the inning. Riley Colburn doubled with Brown on third bringing him home giving the Aces the lead 5-4.
The Cane Cutters answered right back in the top of the eighth inning by scoring three runs and grabbing the lead for the first time in the game. The first two runs were scored on sacrifice flies by Rodriguez that scored Austin Roussel and Seal that scored Braxton Lee. Woods singles later on the inning to score Barba to give them the 7-5 lead.
The Aces were able to respond in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game once again. The first two batters got on base by the way of a single by Rodgers and then a double by Garren Palmer. The next batter, Zorn, singled to score Rodgers and also Palmer who scored on an error by the first baseman.
The top of the ninth inning came around and the Cane Cutters were held to no runs, no hits, no errors and no runners left on base. If they wanted to remain in the game then they had to shut down the Aces in the bottom of the inning and go to their third straight extra-inning game. Colburn started off the inning with a hit by pitch. Vail was up next and sacrificed Colburn over to second base. Votolato came up next and drew the walk putting runners on first and second with one out. Rodgers comes up next and gets hit by the pitch to load the bases. Palmer is the next batter and hits a ground ball to the shortstop who throws to the second baseman to get out number two and then he turns and fires to the first baseman where Palmer dives into the bag to just beat the throw. Colburn scored on the play to end give the Aces the win.
Woods was the highlight for the Cane Cutters going 3-5 with 3 RBIs. He now has a five game hitting streak. Rodriguez and Rhodes each went 2-3 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI and 1 walk. Nau was able to continue his hitting streak extending it to nine games.
William Mathis made his second start of the season for the Cane Cutters receiving a no decision. He pitched five innings giving up four runs on six hits, walking five and striking out one. Kelby Langston received the loss pitching one and two-thirds innings giving up one run on one hit, one walk and two strike outs. His record is now 2-1.
The Cane Cutters record dropped to 8-7 on the season while the Aces are now 6-11. The Cane Cutters travel to McKinney, TX to take on the McKinney Marshals at Allen High School for a two-game series. This will be the first meeting between these two teams this season and the Marshals are struggling this year with a record of 2-13. After this series, the Cane Cutters will be back at home to take on the Victoria Generals for Saturday, June 23 which is Surprise Saturday at Fabacher Field.
