Chiefs Win Second Straight against Red Sox

June 19, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-3, at Alliance Bank Stadium on Tuesday night. The Chiefs have won the first two of a four-game series against the International League-leading Red Sox.

Syracuse (34-37) struck for the game's first run in the opening inning. Leadoff batter Corey Brown singled to left field and Erik Komatsu followed with a bunt single. After Xavier Paul grounded into a double play, Brown was at third with two outs when Chris Marrero knocked a single into center field to plate Brown. It was the first at-bat with the Chiefs this season for Marrero, who is on a Major League rehab assignment for the Nationals.

With Zach Duke keeping Pawtucket (45-27) off the board for the first four innings despite allowing eight batters to reach base in those frames, the Chiefs added two more in the bottom of the fourth. After Brett Carroll hit a one-out single, Koyie Hill bounced a potential double play grounder to third base, but a throwing error by Nate Spears allowed Carroll and Hill to reach third and second, respectively. A batter later, Jim Negrych ripped an opposite-field single to the gap in left-center that scored both Carroll and Hill, who was making his Chiefs debut. For Negrych, the two-run scoring hit was his second against the Red Sox in as many nights. Syracuse led 3-0 after four innings.

Pawtucket started to rally in the top of the fifth, as Tony Thomas led off with a home run. Pedro Ciriaco proceeded to reach base on a bunt and came around to score on a Jason Repko double to left field that brought the Red Sox within a run, 3-2.

The Chiefs answered right away in the home fifth. Corey Brown led off with a double to the gap in left field. Brown then scored his IL-leading 54th run of the season, as Xavier Paul drove him home with a one-out single to right to put Syracuse up by two runs again, 4-2. During the first 14 games of the Chiefs' 20-game homestand, Paul has driven in 12 runs.

The Red Sox scored the final run of the night in the sixth on a leadoff homer from Alex Hassan. Duke retired the next three batters, though, and left the game after six innings, with the Chiefs up 4-3.

Henry Rodriguez, who was also making a Major League rehab assignment, needed just 13 pitches to throw a perfect seventh inning for Syracuse. Jeff Mandel allowed two hits in the eighth, but got out of a jam. Hassan Pena then closed the door in the ninth, sending the Sox down in order, including a strikeout of Repko to end the game.

The Chiefs and Red Sox continue their four-game series at Alliance Bank Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:00. Mitch Atkins looks to lead Syracuse to its third consecutive win against Pawtucket's Justin Germano.
