Tobs Drop Another HeartbreakerJune 17, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) Wilson Tobs
Trailing by a run in their half of the eighth, Morehead City (7-13) evened the score on Tobs reliever, Tyler Bolton as Ryan Cranmer led off the inning with a solo home run over the wall in left to knot the score at one.
As the inning progressed, the Marlins were able to take the lead after a single by Sam Ott and a throwing error by Bolton put runners at first and third with one out for Morehead City and three hitter later - with the bases loaded, Salvatore Annunziata gave the Marlins the lead with on a groundball to third but a throwing error to the plate allowed Ott to score and give Morehead City a 2-1 advantage. The Marlins added another insurance run later in the same frame for the final 3-1 margin.
Wilson (5-13) got the tying run to first base in the ninth inning after a lead-off single and a walk, but could not push anything across as they fell to the Marlins 3-1.
The Tobs opened the scoring in the second inning when Phillip Williams began things with a single and after moving to second on a groundout, the Tobs first basemen scored on a single by Heath Holliday.
Tyler Joyner, who made is Wilson debut on Sunday afternoon and kept the Tobs in the lead as he worked seven innings while scattering four hits and fanning six, however the right-hander earned a no decision as the Marlins tied and took the lead in the eighth.
The Tobs will return to action on Tuesday night when they host the Fayetteville SwampDogs at Historic Fleming Stadium. It will be another 2-for-1 Tuesday and first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
The Wilson Tobs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
