Schnelle Leads Vermont to 3-0 Win at MysticJune 14, 2012 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Vermont Mountaineers
The Mountaineers scored first for the sixth consecutive game as they loaded the bases with one out in the first inning on Schooners (0-5) starter Rick Mangione. With one out, Austin Green worked a five pitch walk to bring home Aaron Barbosa (Dracut, Mass/Northeastern) for the first run of the night, proving to be more than enough offense for Vermont. In the top of the fourth, Green (San Diego, Calif./San Diego) reached on another walk before ultimately scoring on Chris Cook's (Annapolis, Md./George Mason) sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Mangione lasted just three and one-third innings walking seven batters, giving up two runs on one hit while also hitting a batter in the loss. He was followed by Jeff Stoddard and Jose Lopez who pitched a combined four and two-thirds scoreless.
Schnelle (1-0) was dominant in his second start of the year allowing just six baserunners including a walk and hit batter. He then turned the ball over to the bullpen who pitched three no-hit innings in relief as Mystic did not get a hit for the final four innings. Matt Dearden (Newburry, Fla./Indiana) worked a perfect seventh including two strikeouts while Tyler Rogers (Littleton, Colo./Austin Peay) went 1-2-3 in the eighth with a strikeout sending the game into the ninth.
Fresh arrival AJ Robinson (Peoria, Ariz./San Diego) went 3-for-5 in his debut with three singles, including a leadoff base hit in the ninth off reliever Greg Porter. Robinson trotted home after Greg Partyka (Greenview, Ill./Bradley) singled him home to make the Mountaineer lead 3-0 chasing Porter from the game. He was replaced by AJ Rataic who recorded the final two outs of the inning as Vermont left the bases loaded.
Closer Kyle Grana (St. Louis, Mo./Bellarmine) entered the game for the ninth inning and worked around a leadoff error from Sean Trent to pitch a scoreless inning finishing the night with consecutive strikeouts for his first save of the season.
Vermont will return to action on Saturday, June 16 when they host the Danbury Westerners at 6:30 p.m. at Montpelier Recreation Field. The game can be heard live on ESPN 1240, WSKi and online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
Game Notes: The Mountaineers were 4-for-8 in stolen base attempts tonight giving them 20 on the season...Greg Partyka picked up two swipes while AJ Robinson and Aaron Barbosa each had one...every Vermont starter reached base safely for the second consecutive game.
