Pedroza Single Carries Lancaster To Sweep

June 10, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL) Lancaster Barnstormers

Jaime Pedroza's RBI single down the third base line broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning and carried the Lancaster Barnstormers to a 3-1 victory and the sweep of a three-game series from the Bridgeport Bluefish Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The win was Lancaster's 11th in the last 13 games.

Blake Gailen opened the eighth with a double into the right field corner off left-hander Rommie Lewis (2-1). Pedroza followed with a chopper that snuck beyond third baseman Luis Lopez, who was playing up to guard against the possibility of a bunt, scoring Gailen. Emerson Frostad singled to the hole at shortstop one batter later. Following Lewis' second strikeout, Adam Godwin lined a single to left to score Pedroza with an insurance run. Fehlandt Lentini also singled, but Frostad was cut down at home by Kennard Jones.

The Barnstormers took a 1-0 lead in the second as Paul Oseguera issued walks to Pedroza and Francisco Hernandez and hit Brad Boyer with a pitch to load the bases. Godwin walked on four pitches to force home the run before Lentini grounded into a force play to end the inning.

Bridgeport countered immediately. Brock Peterson slammed a leadoff double to the gap in left center and moved to third on Elliott Ayala's one out ground ball. Jake Simmons drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. Former Barnstormer Angel Flores drove in a run with a liner off the glove of starter Alan Johnson. Boyer was unable to handle the deflection on the right side of the infield as the Bluefish tied the game.

Johnson worked into the seventh inning, yielding six hits and one run total. Jeff Bennett (3-2) came on with one out in the eighth following Mike Johnston's walk to Jones and got successive 6-4 force plays to pull the Barnstormers out of trouble. Bennett allowed a single to Luis Lopez in the eighth, and Tim Hamulack picked up his ninth save, retiring the side in the ninth around a two-out walk to Jones.

The Barnstormers head home to host the Long Island Ducks Monday evening at 7:05. Mark Brackman (2-2) will take the hill for Lancaster against right-hander Bob Zimmermann as the Atlantic League's two division leaders open up a three-game series. The game will be aired on 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com and the I Heart Radio cellphone app starting at 6:45.
