Garcia and Tepech Highlight Myrtle Beach Sweep

June 9, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Myrtle Beach Pelicans

ZEBULON, NC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, swept another doubleheader Saturday, their third of the season, beating the Carolina Mudcats 3-0 and 8-1 at Five County Stadium.

The stars of the day were Nick Tepesch and Edwin Garcia. Tepesch tossed his first career complete game in the opener, firing seven shutout innings while allowing only three singles. The righthander faced the minimum through the first three before allowing an infield single to Tyler Holt in the fourth. Tepesch improves his ERA over his last five starts to 0.75. He also won his fourth start in that span with the Pelicans being 5-0 overall in those games.

Myrtle Beach's run support in the first game came in three one-run installments. The Pelicans scored in the first on a Jared Hoying single and Christian Villanueva double. In the third Yefry Castilo doubled and scored on an Odubel Herrera single. Brett Nicholas picked up an RBI single in the fourth.

Game two was sort of all about Edwin Garcia. The third baseman wound up the most major of the Pelicans' four big storylines. Garcia picked up a career high six RBI, at least one in each at-bat, culminating with a three run homerun, his first, off the scoreboard in left. Garcia also picked up RBI on a single and two sac flies.

Also of note for Myrtle Beach in game two's 8-1 victory was Herrera's 4-5 night. The shortstop scored twice, including four pitches into the game. Herrera singled in the first off Francisco Jimenez. He then stole second and took third on an error by catcher Jake Lowery. Garcia's sac fly brought him home for a 1-0 lead. Castillo finished with two hits and three runs, bringing his day's total to 4-6 with two doubles and four runs.

The offensive performances masked a solid pitching game. Spot starter Randol Rojas went four hitless innings, turning over his no-no to Zach Osborne, who picked up three more outs before allowing a homerun to Delvi Cid to lead-off the sixth. The Pelicans fell six outs short of the no-hitter.

The Pelicans offensive production in game two came mostly from the sixth inning, a 10 batter, five run frame. Jake Skole and Tomas Telis doubled in the inning, with Herrera and Vin DiFazio picking up singles and the Garcia homer to cap it off.

Myrtle Beach will try to take three of four from Carolina Sunday at 2pm. It's the fourth time in four series the Pelicans have had a chance for the 3-1 series victory. Myrtle Beach has wound up with splits in all three prior the last week and a half. Kyle Hendricks throws for the Pelicans, making his eighth start on the road.
