Shorebirds Edged in Finale, 3-2, by Crawdads

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (21-31) scored a run in the eighth inning and had the tying run aboard in the ninth, but fell 3-2 to the Hickory Crawdads on Wednesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Brian Roberts went 0-for-3 on Wednesday in his final scheduled rehab start with the Shorebirds.

The Shorebirds scored first in the fourth inning. Brenden Webb drew a walk. Then, a groundout by Wynston Sawyer advanced Webb to second. With one out, Webb stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly to left-center by Gabriel Lino.

The Crawdads answered with a run in the sixth inning on a single to left field by Luis Sardinas to score Rougned Odor. Odor reached third on a stolen base and throwing error by Lino.

Shorebirds starter Zach Davies departed during the sixth inning. He allowed one run on four hits in 5.2 innings.

The Crawdads took the lead in the eighth inning with two runs. Odor doubled and reached third on a wild pitch. Sardinas hit a tapper down the first baseline to plate Odor. Sardinas reached third as the throw from reliever Devin Jones sailed wide of first. Then, Chris Grayson hit a chopper towards third to score Sardinas.

The Shorebirds cut into the 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning. Glynn Davis doubled down the left field line and Nicky Delmonico followed with a lined double that one hopped the right field wall to trim the gap to 3-2.

In the ninth inning, Gabriel Lino singled through the left field side of the infield to start the inning. Then, Hickory reliever Arlett Mavare struck out the final three hitters of the game.

Kevin Matthews earned the win over two innings. He allowed three hits and one run. Devin Jones was pinned with the loss over two innings. He allowed two hits and two runs.

The Shorebirds hit the road for seven games starting on Thursday, May 31 against the Hagerstown Suns.
