Asheville Tourists News Release

The Asheville Tourists surrendered more runs than they have all season (12), they committed more errors in one game than they have all season (5), and they allowed more runs to score in one inning than they have all season (8); yet still found a way to win their series opener against Charleston 15-12.

In one of the most anticipated matchups in the South Atlantic League all year, Asheville overcame some mistakes and battled back after blowing a six-run lead. The Tourists showed resolve and increased their lead in the SAL Southern Division to 3.5 games over the second place RiverDogs.

Asheville led 6-0 and 9-3 before Charleston put together an eight-run sixth inning to go ahead 11-9. The inning featured four Tourists errors and five unearned runs. In the bottom of the sixth, Asheville struck back with six runs of their own to capture a 15-11 lead. Charleston plated one run late, but it was not enough to stop the Tourists home winning streak; now at eight.

Trevor Story homered for Asheville and finished with three RBI's while Jared Simon and Taylor Featherston each tallied three hits. Dante Bichette Jr. had four hits for the RiverDogs and Ben Gamel chipped in with three base knocks.

The Tourists used a balanced attack throughout the game as they plated one in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and six in the sixth. Charleston's runs came in bunches; three in the fourth and eight in the sixth.

Tyler Anderson (3-0, 3.75) received a no decision in his fourth start of the year, but the lefty pitched well. Jefri Hernandez earned his seventh save of the season by working a perfect ninth.

Asheville has now won 12 of their last 13 games and will face Charleston in game two on Tuesday evening at 7:05pm.
