SUGAR LAND, Texas - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, starting shortstop Dominic Ramos took an 0-2 curve ball up and over the left field wall to give the Skeeters (14-15) a 4-3 win in 10 innings over the Barnstormers (15-15) in front of 7000 fans Sunday night at Constellation Field.
Lefty veteran and Barnstormers starting pitcher John Halama went eight innings allowing two runs off four hits and was in line for the win until the ninth. Closer Tim Hamulack had a 3-2 lead but started off the innings facing the top of the lineup. Drew Locke led off by striking out quickly using up an out for the comeback. However, player-coach Vic Gutierrez poked a single to the left side of the infield forcing a foul throw from shortstop Jamie Pedroza to first baseman Tommy Everidge pulling him off the bag allowing Gutierrez to sneak under the tag.
Jason Botts singled into center in the very next at-bat, and on a risky decision, Gutierrez rounded for third sliding in a second before the tag was made. With runners on the corners, Hamulack threw wide of the plate in Ofilio Castro's at-bat allowing Gutierrez to easily trot home for the game-tying run, 3-3. Hamulack's blown save (BS, 2) optioned the game to extra innings for the second time this season for the Skeeters.
After Ryan Houston (1-1) fired three-up three-down in the top of the tenth, the Skeeters used the momentum swing in the home-half of the inning. Jeff Bennett (2-2) made his second relief appearance of the series to give the Barnstormers a chance to see the 11th. Starting catcher Manny Mejia popped out on a high infield fly for out number one, and designated-hitter Octavio Martinez grounded out on a great infield play from the hole by Pedroza for out number two.
With none on and two outs in the inning, Dominic Ramos took the first two pitches for strikes. After fouling off a third, with an 0-2 count, Ramos lifted a curve ball down the left field line onto the roof of the Performance Mazda Picnic Plaza to give the Skeeters a heart-pounding victory, 4-3.
Throughout the game, Josh Pressley broke out in a big way with his 99th home run (3) in Atlantic League history moving him into 8th place overall. Jason Botts also crushed a ball to left for a solo shot (7) to help fight the resounding veteran Halama.
Barnstormers first baseman Tommy Everidge also hit a solo shot to left (2) off Derrick Gordon early in the sixth.
Gordon fired six innings of four-hit ball giving up only three runs while striking out five. Eric Krebs and Will Startup combined for three innings of no-hit ball while facing just 10 batters from the seventh to the ninth.
