Stone Crabs Fall to Mets 2-1
May 27, 2012 - Florida State League (FSL) Charlotte Stone Crabs
PORT ST. LUCIE -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs were unable to hold an early lead, dropping the finale of a three-game series to the St. Lucie Mets by a 2-1 final score on Sunday at Digital Domain Park.Charlotte's woes against St. Lucie continued with the loss, the ninth consecutive against the Mets to open the season series. The Stone Crabs are also in the midst of a five-game skid overall.
Facing Mets righty Erik Goeddel, older brother of 2011 Rays first round pick Tyler Goeddel, Charlotte had ample opportunity but managed just one run over the first five innings. That came on Mikie Mahtook's RBI ground-out in the third.
For the second time in as many days, the Stone Crabs were undone by a walk. Braulio Lara worked 5-2/3 innings of shut-out ball before being lifted after a two-out walk to Francisco Pena. That free pass proved costly as the Mets turned it into the first of two runs in the inning.
With Eliazer Suero in teh game, Jose Torres drilled a line drive double off which barely missed going over the left field wall to put runners at second and third. Joe Bonfe followed with a two-run single that put the Mets ahead to stay.
Adam Kolarek worked the final two innings to earn his seventh save of the season, making a winner of Hamilton Bennett in relief.
The Stone Crabs have Monday off before beginning a three-game set against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Budweiser Two-for-Tuesday and Seniors Eat Free night at Charlotte Sports Park. Lefty C.J. Riefenhauser is set to make the start. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
