Drillers Blanked by Frisco's Grimm
May 24, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Tulsa Drillers
Frisco's Justin Grimm has been one of the top pitchers in the Texas League this season. In his 10th start of the year Thursday night at ONEOK Field, Grimm did nothing to change that standing. The right-hander worked seven shutout innings and helped the RoughRiders to a 4-0 victory over the Tulsa Drillers.Angelys Nina recorded one of Tulsa's six hits in Thursday's 4-0 loss at ONEOK Field.
Grimm was effective as well as efficient. He allowed only six singles and did not walk a batter while striking out six. The victory improved his season record to 7-3.
For the Drillers, it was fifth time this season that they have been shutout and the second time at ONEOK Field. Three of the shutouts have come in the past five games.
Despite the defeat, Tulsa retains its first-place standing atop the North Division of the Texas League.
Grimm had a lead before ever taking the mound as Frisco went in front early by scoring in each of the first two innings off Tulsa starter Parker Frazier. In the top of the first, Riders shortstop Jurickson Profar doubled with one out. Mike Olt followed with a base hit that right fielder Kent Matthes fumbled, allowing Profar to come home with the game's first run.
In the second, Alex Buchholz and Leury Garcia led off with consecutive singles. Buchholz came home when Frazier got a double play grounder off the bat of Jared Prince. Catcher Jose Felix followed with a double and eventually scored on a base hit from Profar to make it 3-0.
Cory Riordan relieved Frazier to open the third and worked a scoreless inning before the Riders struck again in the top of the fourth. Felix led off and reached safely on an error by third baseman Nolan Arenado. He moved to second on a ground out by Profar and scored on a base hit by Olt.
It was the shortest outing of the season for Frazier, who was removed after throwing 53 pitches in two innings. The Tulsa native surrendered six hits, two walks and three runs (2ER).
Riordan allowed only the one unearned run in three innings, while relievers Mike Marbry, Zach Simons and Joey Williamson combine to keep the Riders off the scoreboard over the game's final four innings.
Arenado was held without a hit for the first time in nearly two weeks, snapping his 12-game hitting streak. Kiel Roling was also hitless, ending his 10-game streak.
The Drillers and RoughRiders will play the deciding game of their three-game series Friday night. Lefthander Nick Schmidt (2-2, 3.38 ERA) will pitch the finale against Chad Bell (0-0. 0.45 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with a post-game Fireworks Show following the game.
