Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters (12-14) used a combined shutout performance from three pitchers to record their fourth win in a row and seventh in their last eight games with a 9-0 win in game one over the first-place Lancaster Barnstormers Thursday night in front of 6441 fans at Constellation Field.

Heath Phillips (0-2) made his second start of the season and pitched a solid four innings while just giving up four hits. Pedro Liriano (1-1) recorded the win after backing Phillips up with four shutout innings of his own retiring 11 batters in a row at one point.

Rich Rundles (1-1) came into the game as the best pitcher in the Atlantic League, but the Skeeters bats were unkind to the lefty forcing him into his shortest outing of the season since his first start. Rundles fired five and a third innings giving up eight hits and six runs before getting yanked.

The scoring started in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs in the inning. Drew Locke singled in the first run of the game and Bubba Bell walked in the second to put the Skeeters ahead, 2-0. After a quick fifth, the sixth inning got out of control for Rundles. The Skeeters used six runs of four hits and two errors while bringing 12 batters to the plate to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The highlights featured a Jason Botts bases clearing double with one out in the inning off reliever Chin-Lung Lo and a Jimmy Van Ostrand RBI-double into right.

Sugar Land tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth thank to a well placed Locke single to put the game further out of reach, 9-0.
