Mississippi Braves News Release

Huntsville, AL - The Mississippi Braves split a doubleheader with the Huntsville Stars on Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium, falling in game one 5-4 before taking game two 6-0.

In game one, the Braves (16-22) scored first when Keenan Wiley came in on a Joe Leonard sacrifice fly, but three runs for Huntsville (22-16) put the Stars ahead for good in the bottom of the first. Mississippi fell behind 4-1 on a run-scoring wild pitch in the third. They pulled to within a run at 4-3 on two runs in the fourth, one by a Jason Jaramillo throwing error and another on a pass ball, but they didn't have enough to complete the comeback.

Jose Lugo suffered his first loss for the Braves. He allowed five runs on seven hits over four innings. Luis Avilan pitched the final two frames without giving up a run. Tyler Thornburg earned his fifth win in as many decisions by allowing just one earned run on five hits in six innings.

Game two was all Braves on both sides of the ball. Leonard started the scoring with a two-run home run to left in the first inning, his first of the year. Mississippi then got an RBI triple from Todd Cunningham in the third, a two-run double by Ian Gac in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly by Barrett Kleinknecht in the sixth to grow a 6-0 lead.

That lead was more than Sean Gilmartin would need, as he didn't allow a run over his six innings. The Stars managed just five hits off the left-hander. He picked up his second straight victory, while Kyle Heckathorn took his second loss of the season.

The Braves and Stars battle in the fourth and final game of the series on Tuesday morning at 10:43 AM CT. The Braves send David Hale (2-2, 4.66) to the mound against Hiram Burgos, who makes his double-A debut. Listen live at 103.9 WYAB or online at MississippiBraves.com.
