Threshers Rally Past Stone Crabs

May 7, 2012 - Florida State League (FSL) Charlotte Stone Crabs

CLEARWATER -- No lead was safe for the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Monday. The Clearwater Threshers mounted two comebacks before plating the eventual winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to take a 6-5 win at Bright House Field.

That victory gave the Threshers 3-out-of-4 from the Stone Crabs, and allowed them to earn their first series victory over Charlotte since May of 2009.

The Stone Crabs struck for three runs in the top of the third inning, highlighted by Cody Rogers' first homer of the season, a laser beam two-run shot over the right field wall.

After the Threshers tied the game 3-3 with a two-run third inning, Mayo Acosta delivered his second home run in as many days in the fourth inning to put Charlotte back on top. Mikie Mahtook's run-scoring single in the fifth stretched the Stone Crabs' lead to 5-3.

Wilking Rodriguez (0-4) was unable to hold on to either of those leads. He was charged with five runs - all earned - in his 4-2/3 innings of work, departing with the bases loaded in what would become a fateful fifth inning for the Threshers.

Charlotte reliever George Jensen's first pitch was hit for a two-run double by Anthony Hewitt that allowed Clearwater to erase the second Stone Crabs lead of the day.

The game came off track for Charlotte in the top of the eighth when both first baseman Phil Wunderlich and manager Jim Morrison were ejected. Wunderlich was called out on batter's interference by the homeplate umpire Matt Springer and summarily tossed for arguing.

Morrison took over Wunderlich's case with Springer, but eventually returned to the third base coach's box. Field umpire Alex Ransom then took exception with Morrison and ejected the Charlotte manager as well.

Clearwater took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth against Jensen (2-1) with a two-out run-scoring rally. Jensen walked Cameron Rupp before surrendering back-to-back singles to load the bases for Carlos Alonso, who walked to bring home the go-ahead run and make it 6-5.

The Stone Crabs return home to open up a four-game series against the Daytona Cubs on Tuesday evening at Charlotte Sports Park. Lefty Grayson Garvin will take the mound in the opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
