Dash Fall Short against Salem

May 5, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Winston-Salem Dash

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A five-run third inning coupled with a spectacular debut from Matt Barnes was too much for the Dash to overcome as they fell 6-4 to Salem in front of 6,027 fans Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark.

Salem (15-12) sent eight batters to the plate in the third and loaded the bases for Travis Shaw, who drove in all three runners with a double to right-center field. Brandon Jacobs followed with an RBI single to score Shaw before stealing second and coming around on an error to give the Red Sox a 5-0 lead.

Barnes (1-0) flummoxed the Dash lineup to the tune of 12 strikeouts in six innings. The Boston Red Sox top draft pick in 2011 allowed one run and four hits in his High-A debut for Salem.

Winston-Salem (17-11) broke through offensively in the sixth inning. Juan Silverio led off with a single and Marcus Semien singled him home to cut the deficit to 6-1.

Semien finished 2-for-3 on the night and improved his hit streak to 13 games, which ties the longest mark in the Carolina League this season.

The Dash rallied in the eighth, plating three runs to cut the deficit to 6-4. Carlos Sanchez reached on an error and drove in Silverio to kick off the eighth-inning scoring. With two outs, Brady Shoemaker lined a base hit into left field to bring home Semien and Sanchez.

Winston-Salem put together a final charge in the ninth inning when Silverio and Semien reached base. Red Sox closer Mike Olmsted entered to face Sanchez and induced a flyout to center field to end the game.

The Dash look to take the rubber game of the series when right-hander Matt Heidenreich (2-1, 5.22 ERA) takes the mound. The Red Sox send southpaw Drake Britton (1-3, 10.71 ERA) to the hill.
