Late Goal Gives Gamblers a 3-2 Victory, 2-0 Advantage in Series
May 4, 2012 - United States Hockey League (USHL) Indiana Ice
A 39-24 shot difference wasn't about to slow down the Indiana Ice on Friday as they faced off with the USHL-leading Green Bay Gamblers in game two of the Eastern Conference Finals. That is until the final 40 seconds of the game.
Indy corralled the regular season's most potent offense for a majority of the game, until two goals late in the third gave Green Bay the 3-2 win and a 2-0 advantage in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Daniil Tarasov and Sean Kuraly both recorded goals for Indy while Jon Gillies was solid in net, allowing three goals on 39 attempts.
Both goaltenders faced a lot of rubber in the first period with Gillies besting all 15 shots in the opening stanza. Despite a combined 26 bullets between the two teams, neither the nor the Gamblers could solve the netminding dilemma. After 20 minutes of play, both squads entered the locker rooms in a scoreless contest.
Indy logged only six scoring opportunities in the middle period, but conversions by Tarasov and Kuraly gave the Ice a 2-1 lead going into the second intermission. Tarasov extended his point streak to 18 games when he sniped the puck through Green Bay goaltender Ryan McKay and into the twine. Robbie Baillargeon striped the puck in the neutral zone and teamed up with Kuraly to earn the assists.
Nolan LaPorte knotted the game at one goal apiece at the 9:04 mark before Kuraly picked up a rebound off a Ryan Obuchowski shot and rifled it into the top shelf for his third goal in four games.
The Ice kept the Gamblers at bay despite being outshot 11-7 in the final frame. A Kyle Novak goal with less than five minutes remaining in the game again tied the game before Broadhurst gave Green Bay its first and final lead of the game with 40 seconds remaining.
The Eastern Conference Finals shift back to the Circle City when Indy hosts Green Bay for a crucial game three matchup from the Pepsi Coliseum at 5:05 pm.
