Craig Clubs Redbirds Past Cubs

Memphis, TN - Allen Craig clubbed two home runs and drove in all of his teams runs as the Memphis Redbirds (10-14) beat the Iowa Cubs (9-14) 5-4 at Auto Zone Park tonight. The Cubs have lost four of their last five games overall and four of five against the Redbirds this season.

The Redbirds jumped out to an early lead when Craig connected on his first home run with two on in the bottom of the first inning.

The Cubs would battle back against Redbirds' starter Shelby Miller. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the third, Anthony Rizzo pulled the Cubs to within one with a two-run single. In the top of the fourth inning, Adrian Cardenas launched a solo homer to right-center that tied the game at three.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Cubs loaded the bases again and Blake Lalli brought in Luis Valbuena with a sacrifice fly to right field that gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryan Jackson delivered a two-out single that kept the inning alive for Craig, who hit his second homer off Cubs' starter Travis Wood to put the Redbirds back on top.

Both teams got good work from their bullpens. Nate Robertson, Frank Batista, and Jeff Beliveau each pitched a scoreless inning for the Cubs. Nick Greenwood pitched two scoreless innings, Adam Reifer handled the eighth, and Eduardo Sanchez struck out the side in the ninth to earn his fifth save for the Redbirds. Miller (3-2) earned his third straight win. Wood (1-3) suffered the loss.

The Cubs and Redbirds continue this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Auto Zone Park. RH Jay Jackson (1-2, 6.20) is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs against LH Nick Additon (0-1, 3.520 for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
