Memphis Stuns Storm Chasers

April 29, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) Omaha Storm Chasers

Memphis, TN - Pete Kozma's three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning carried Memphis to a 5-4 win over Omaha Sunday afternoon in the last of a four-game set at AutoZone Park. The Storm Chasers split four games against their division rivals and head to Nashville to begin their next series at 17-7 after two one-run losses.

Ryan Verdugo blanked the Redbirds until Cedric Hunter's two-run homer with two outs in the seventh put the hosts in the lead at 2-1. The Omaha southpaw lasted a season-long seven innings, allowing the two runs on just four hits while walking three and striking out five.

RJ Swindle opened the eighth on the hill for Memphis and left with runners at the corners and one out. Chuckie Fick replaced Swindle and committed a balk that allowed pinch-runner Terry Evans to score to tie the game and David Lough to advance to second, from where he scored the go-ahead run on Anthony Seratelli's fifth hit of the series. Derrick Robinson finished the three-run surge with a base hit that plated Jamie Romak before Irving Falu was tagged out in a rundown to end the frame.

Francisely Bueno took over for Verdugo and tossed a scoreless bottom half of the eighth but was unable to close the door in the ninth. With two outs and a runner at first, Johnny Giavotella could not handle a Hunter ground ball which allowed the inning to continue and set up the dramatic finish. Kozma then slugged a 2-1 offering from Bueno over the wall in left field for his first second round-tripper of the season

The Storm Chasers struck first in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Clint Robinson that plated Derrick Robinson, who started the game with a walk. The visitors put runners at the corners with one out in the fifth but Derrick Robinson was picked off at first base before Giavotella flied out to end the inning.

Omaha had a great chance to add to the lead in the sixth, putting runners at second and third with nobody out but could not cash in. Max Ramirez struck out in front of Lough, who was walked intentionally to load the bases. The rally fizzled when Seratelli grounded into a force play at the plate and Romak bounced out to third.

The Storm Chasers open a four-game series in Nashville Monday with left-hander Mike Montgomery taking the mound against Sounds right-hander Brian Baker. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on AM 1180 and online at omahastormchasers.com.
