Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - The Clinton LumberKings toppled the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Sunday afternoon 7-3 at Ashford University Field. The TinCaps took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but the LumberKings scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to earn their first back-to-back wins of the season. With the loss, Fort Wayne falls to 6-11 and the team's two-game winning streak comes to an end.
Through the first two innings neither team had a runner reach base, but in the third Fort Wayne got on the board. Donavan Tate and Matt Colantonio led off the frame with back-to-back singles, and Tate advanced to third on Colantonio's hit. Corey Adamson flied out to center field, but the ball was hit deep enough that Tate could score, and Fort Wayne went up 1-0.Two batters later, Casey McElroy singled to center field, putting the TinCaps up 3-0. Fort Wayne, however, would not score again.
The Clinton (6-11) offensive began in the fourth against TinCaps starter Adys Portillo. LumberKings first baseman Jharmidy De Jesus plated Jamal Austin, cutting the lead to 3-1. Clinton scored twice in the fifth, aided by a Donavan Tate error, as the TinCaps left fielder failed to catch a fly ball, which had it been caught, would have been the second out of the inning. Portillo left the game with the score tied 3-3 after five innings, allowing three runs, only one of which was earned. He walked four and struck out two.
Luis De La Cruz (1-2) pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Fort Wayne, and the righty allowed four runs, three earned, while walking one and striking out two. When De La Cruz departed, the Clinton advantage was 7-3. Colin Rea worked a scoreless eighth.
For Clinton, starter Stephen Landazuri (2-0) worked one out into the seventh inning before his afternoon came to a close. En route to the victory, he allowed three earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out three. Kyle Hunter pitched two and two thirds innings, striking out three and surrendering a lone base hit for the save.
Game two of the set is Monday at 7:30 PM. Fort Wayne is scheduled to send righthander Joe Ross to the hill, and Clinton's scheduled starter is lefty Jordan Shipers.
