April 17, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power dropped a 12-7 decision to the Asheville Tourists on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Tourists broke up a 2-2 tie in the seventh with seven runs, including a grand slam by David Kandilas, and the Power could not overcome the Asheville offense for the second straight night.

On the heels of a 16-0 loss Monday, West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Jose Osuna doubled and scored on a single by Willy Garcia. The Power added a run against Tourists' starter Chris Jensen in the fifth with a single by Junior Sosa, a stolen base, an error, and a single by Kirk Singer.

Asheville tied the game at two in the sixth against Power starting pitcher Matt Benedict. In the seventh, Porifirio Lopez took over for Benedict. Lopez, added to the roster earlier in the day, loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter before walking in the go-ahead run. Two more Tourists would score and Lopez left after two-thirds of an inning pitched and the bases loaded again. Kandilas hit a 2-2 pitch from Vince Payne over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 9-2 lead.

West Virginia plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit down to 9-4. Each team scored three runs in the ninth to bring the game to a close.

Benedict pitched six innings for the Power; the longest start by any West Virginia pitcher this season, though he did not factor in the decision. Lopez (0-1) took the loss for West Virginia while Jensen (1-0) earned the win. Alen Hanson had two hits for the Power to extend his team-best hitting streak to nine straight games.

In five games against Asheville this season, West Virginia has surrendered 57 runs and only scored 22.

The Power and Tourists concludethis series Wednesday morning at 11:05 am. Zac Fuesser and Dan Winkler will pitch for West Virginia and Asheville, respectively. The game will feature a college and career fair presented by CFWV.com.

POWER RECORD: 5-8
