Jackals Drop Game 1 to Royals, 4-1

Reading, Pa. - The Elmira Jackals fell in Game 1 of the best-of-five Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Sovereign Center, 4-1, to the Reading Royals.

The Royals registered the first goal of the series in the opening period. Yannick Riendeau took a long feed from Dave Cowan, snapped a puck off of Brian Stewart, and then pushed in the rebound from the goal line to give the Royals a 1-0 lead at 16:48.

Elmira wasted no time in battling back to tie the game up. Jimmy Martin wristed a puck in from the right circle past Mark Owuya just 16 seconds after Riendeau's goal, knotting the score, 1-1, at 17:04.

With the Jackals scrambling around their net, Kenny Ryan banked a puck off of an Elmira skater's stick and in from behind the net to put Reading back in front, 2-1, at 2:10 of the second.

In the third period, Ryan took a feed from Riendeau at 7:39 and fired the puck past Stewart from the right circle, extending Reading's lead to 3-1.

Yannick Tifu sealed the game with an empty-net goal from center ice at 18:46, closing out the scoring, 4-1.

Stewart (0-1) made 23 saves on 26 shots in the outing. Owuya (1-0) turned aside 35 of 36 shots in the victory.

Elmira and Reading meet in Game 2 on Wednesday night at the Sovereign Center at 7:05 p.m. The Jackals will host the final three games of the series this Friday, Saturday (if necessary), and Monday (if necessary).
