Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - White Sox legend Minnie Minoso is scheduled to appear and sign autographs at RailCats Final Four Fan Fest on Saturday, March 31.

"Mr. White Sox" was a nine-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner who spent parts of 12 seasons with the White Sox during his 17-year Major League career. He is one of only two players in Major League history to play in five different decades, and the only player to play professionally in seven different decades.

Minoso batted .298 in his Major League career and both scored and batted in over 1,000 runs. His number 9 was retired by the White Sox in 1983 and he has been a hotly-debated Baseball Hall of Fame candidate who fell three votes shy of induction in December.

Minoso is already linked to the RailCats, as he last appeared in a game in 2003 at the age of 77 years old for the St. Paul Saints in a game against the RailCats. He faced RailCats pitcher Tim Byrdak and walked on six pitches. According to Sports Illustrated, Byrdak used an old-school windup on the first two pitches of the at-bat. Byrdak later became the first RailCats player to reach the big leagues. "It was great," Byrdak told SI. "And when they came in after the game and said the lineup card with our names on it was going to the Hall of Fame, it was like Christmas."

The fourth annual event will include festivities from 2-9 p.m., with activities from 2-5 p.m. followed by a chili cook-off and watching the college basketball Final Four games from 5 to 9, with an opportunity for fans to win prizes during the games.

Fans are encouraged to purchase Fan Fest tickets in advance at the discounted price of $12 for adults, $10 for season ticket holders and Gary residents and $7 for kids 12 and under. Tickets will cost $15 for adults, $12 for season ticket holders and Gary residents and $10 for kids on the day of the event.
