Atlanta Dream News Release

ATLANTA, February 28, 2012 -The Atlanta Dream won the Team of the Year award presented by The Home Depot at the sold out 7th annual Atlanta Sports Awards, held last night in the historic Fox Theatre's Egyptian Ballroom.

"We have come a long way in a short period of time," said Dream Head Coach Marynell Meadors. "The goal is to win a championship and that's what we are trying to do."

The Dream won its second consecutive Eastern Conference championship in 2011, advancing once again to the WNBA Finals in just the franchise's fourth season in Atlanta. Grayson High School football and Walton High School girls tennis were the other finalists in the Team of the Year category.

Meadors was also a finalist for Coach of the Year, which was awarded to Grayson High School football coach Mickey Conn. Meadors has guided the Dream to three straight playoff appearances and back-to-back Eastern Conference championships in four seasons with the Dream.

"The tremendous impact that each of these athletes and sports organizations continue to have on Atlanta, both in the community and on their respective fields of play is immeasurable," said Dan Corso, executive director of the Atlanta Sports Council. "We are honored to be able to come together each year as a sports community in celebration of their outstanding achievements."

A total of nine awards were given to athletes, coaches and sports alumni in honor of accomplishments within their communities. Created in 2006 by the Atlanta Sports Council, the Atlanta Sports Awards has become a way to rally the Atlanta sports community to recognize athletic excellence on a yearly basis. The Atlanta Sports Awards honors those who distinguish themselves from among the five million people living in Atlanta. That includes all professional sports teams, universities, junior colleges and more than 250 public and private high schools in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Dream tips off its fifth season this summer at Philips Arena as part of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), the world's longest-running women's professional sports league. The Dream, the defending two-time, back-to-back Eastern Conference Champion, opens its home schedule on May 25 against the New York Liberty. Season and group tickets are on sale now and individual tickets will be available for purchase in the spring. For more information, visit www.AtlantaDream.net or call (877) 977-7729.
