Thunder strike first, have four game win streak snapped
February 25, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL) Stockton Thunder
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Parker Stanfield scored one goal and added an assist, helping build a rally of four unanswered goals by the Bakersfield Condors, who sent the Stockton Thunder (27-22-5, 59 points) to a 4-1 defeat before 6,092 fans at Rabobank Arena on Saturday. The Thunder, who absorbed only their third loss in ten games this season to the Condors and saw a four game winning streak snapped, earned its only goal on a first period power play marker by Matt Reber.
Bakersfield goaltender Bryan Pitton earned his first win since Jan. 20 with 27 saves in net.
Reber cashed in with a power play goal to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead with 8:46 left in the first period, capitalizing off a rebound originally produced by a Chris Doyle slap shot from the high slot.
A Condors power play goal leveled the score, 1-1 with 1:15 left in the period, when Parker Stanfield threw a puck to the net from the right corner which was deflected in by Tyler Helfrich.
Peter Boyd snuck a rebound under Thunder goaltender Thomas Heemskerk at 7:34 of the second period for a 2-1 Condors edge, after Heemskerk stopped Ian McKenzie's wrist shot from the right wing on a 2-on-1 break.
Justin Pender then extended the Bakersfield lead to 3-1 when he scored on a rare slapshot goal from center ice, slipping the blast by Heemskerk for his fourth goal of the season.
The Bakersfield run was stretched to four unanswered goals at the 2:38 mark of the third period when Parker Stanfield converted on a wraparound attempt through Heemskerk's five hole for a 4-1 bulge.
Heemskerk took the loss with 24 saves.
