Gateway Grizzlies News Release

The Gateway Grizzlies have re-signed pitcher Erick Carillo and infielder Brian Harris for the 2012 season.

Carillo joined Gateway late in the 2011 season as part of a trade with the River City Rascals that involved sluggers Charlie Lisk and Logan Parker. Carillo, a 6-1 190-pound right-hander, went 1-2 with a 4.55 ERA in five appearances (four starts) with the Grizzlies. He struck out 20 batters in 27 2/3 innings.

Carillo, 25, was a 19th round draft pick of the Marlins in the 2009 MLB draft. He spent two seasons in their organization, compiling a 10-9 record between low-A Jamestown and single-A Greensboro. He is a native of Loma Linda, CA.

"Erick impressed us when he was with River City and we really liked the way he threw in his short time here," Grizzlies sixth-year Manager Phil Warren said. "He will be one of our more experienced pitchers in 2012 and we expect him to throw like a veteran. Erick has a high upside."

Harris was traded to Gateway in June 2011 for outfielder Jason Patton. In 57 games with the Grizzlies, the 5-9 180-pound middle infielder batted .211 with three homers and 18 RBI. He saw action at both second base and shortstop.

Before his time with the Rascals, Harris spent 2010 at Rookie ball in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. Harris, 25, was a two-time (2009 and 2010) all-SEC infielder at Vanderbilt University. He is from Nashville, TN.

"Brian will compete for time at multiple positions in the infield," Warren said. "He has a really nice glove, but was a streaky hitter last season. If he becomes more consistent at the plate, he could be a real nice player for us. He plays hard and he's a real competitor on the field."

The Grizzlies open their season on May 18th against the reigning Frontier League Champion, Joliet Slammers. Season and Group tickets are on sale now by calling 618.337.3000.
