Former Third Team All-American, Tom Zebroski, Returns to Beach Bums

On October 27, 2011 the Traverse City Beach Bums announced the return of second baseman Tom Zebroski.

Zebroski played college ball at The George Washington University, where in 2009 he led the Atlantic-10 conference with a .429 average and 18 home runs. He was selected as a 3rd team Louisville Slugger All-American and was drafted in the 45th round of the 2010 MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals.

In 2011, he hit .281 with three home runs and 25 RBI for the Beach Bums and is sure to be a major part of the 2012 Beach Bums ball club

I believe Zebroski is one of the better ball players in the Frontier League, and last summer I had the privilege to interview his college coach, Steve Mrowka.

DN: After leading the Atlantic-10 conference with a .429 average and 18 home runs, Tom was named to the 3rd team Louisville Slugger All-American team. Yet, he was not drafted until the 45th round. Did it surprise you that he was not selected earlier?

SM: Pro teams look at speed and arm strength as key indicators for their picks. Tom is a great player, but not a burner as far as the pro's. I thought he should be a top 20 round guy.

DN: Please describe the type of ballplayer Tom is and what he meant to the Colonials.

SM: He is a great baseball player that can really hit. He out-worked everyone in our program. Led by example on & off the field. He truly left a mark on the Colonial program.

DN: What would you consider to be the strongest part of Tom's game?

SM: Great hitter and instincts to play the game.

DN: What would you consider to be the weakest part of Tom's game?

SM: Average speed & arm strength.

DN: Tom struggled at the plate a little in his first professional season (batting .243 @ Idaho Falls) and was let go by the Royals. Do you see Tom making it back into affiliated ball, and and if so, why (i.e. work ethic, offensive promise, defensive promise, etc.)?

SM: If he can put up good numbers, no question he should get a shot with a team.

As you can see, coach Mrowka still thinks highly of Zebroski and if you get the chance you should get out to Wuerfel Park this summer and see him play.

Single game tickets for the Beach Bums go on sale in May. For more information on tickets call 231-943-0100.
