Renegades Announce 2012 Coaching StaffJanuary 5, 2012 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) - Hudson Valley Renegades
The 2012 season marks Sandberg's third consecutive year as the Renegades manager and fifth year coaching in the Rays system. Before making the jump to coach, Sandberg enjoyed a 12-year playing career which included three major league seasons, (Rays, 2001-03). Sandberg currently holds the Rays all-time minor league records with 113 home runs, 473 RBI and 417 runs.
Sandberg has had the privilege of playing, coaching and managing for the Renegades throughout his career. During the 1998 season Sandberg manned third base and helped lead the Renegades to the best finish in franchise history, 50-26. During that season Sandberg recorded a .288 batting average with 12 home runs and 54 RBI. In 2008, Sandberg returned to the Renegades for his first professional coaching position as the team's hitting coach. The team recorded a .264 batting average that season.
Pitching Coach Kyle Snyder marks his first season with the Rays organization as he debuts as the Renegades pitching coach for 2012. Snyder started his professional baseball career in 1999, when he was drafted in the first round (7th overall pick) by the Kansas City Royals. He spent parts of three seasons (2003, 2005-2006) with the Royals before being claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox. The right-handed pitcher was with the Red Sox from 2006-2008 and helped lead the Red Sox to their second World Series title in four years in 2007 (2004 and 2007).
Bench Coach Dan DeMent joins the Renegades for his first season in the Hudson Valley and his fourth with the Rays organization. After going undrafted, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed the shortstop/second baseman and went on to be named the Appalachian League's 2000 All-Star DH. DeMent spent the next five years in the Rays system before being picked up by the Washington Nationals in the 2005 Minor League Rule 5 Draft. DeMent spent his professional baseball career in the minor league system reaching as high as Triple-A before entering his professional coaching career.
The Athletic Trainer Brian Newman is in his first year with the Renegades and the Rays organization.
