Mavericks Begin 2011-12 Season Friday

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks begin their third season in the Central Hockey League (CHL) this Friday, October 21 against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. The Mavericks will play a pair of games against the Killer Bees over the weekend before traveling to Arizona to take on the Sundogs in three games next week.

Every Mavericks' road game will be streamed live at The Brewtop Pub and Patio. Both games this weekend against the Killer Bees will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Brewtop will have food and drink specials for Mavericks' fans. Brewtop is located at 700 NE Woods Chapel Dr. in Lee's Summit and will host every away game watch party and post-game party during the 2011-12 season.

Notes:

Third season - Missouri will begin their third season this Friday and it will be the second time the Mavericks have started the season on the road. The Mavericks are 1-1-0 in opening night games and 0-1-0 on the road on opening night.

Road trip to start - The Mavericks will get their longest road trip of the season out of the way by starting with their first six games on the road. After a pair of games this weekend in Rio Grande Valley, Missouri will travel to Prescott Valley, Arizona for three games against the Arizona Sundogs. Finally, the Mavericks will travel to Wichita on Friday, November 4 to start a home-and-home series against the Thunder.

Slow starts - Through their first two seasons, the Mavericks have had slow starts in the month of October. Missouri is a combined 4-8-1 in October and the team has not won more than two games in the month in their first two seasons.

New faces - The Mavericks signed many new players during the off-season including a few veterans and six rookies. One of a few marquee signings included reigning CHL scoring champion Sebastien Thinel who had 110 points last season. The Mavericks have also acquired a former CHL goal scoring champion, Ed McGrane, who had 44 goals in 2009-10 and has a total of 368 points (150-218368) in 281 games in the CHL. On the defensive end, the Mavericks signed David Pszenyczny (pshuh-NITCH-nee) who won the 2011 CHL Championship with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.

Returning players - The Maverick have 10 returning players on the roster. Both goaltenders, Charlie Effinger and Gerry Festa return to the Mavericks. Effinger played for the Mavericks during the team's inaugural season and Festa returns for his third season with the club. Defensemen Cole Ruwe and Mike Wakita return to the blue line, and forwards Vern Cooper, Brandon Coccimiglio, Ryan Jardine, Andrew Courtney, Carlyle Lewis and Nathan O'Nabigon have all returned.

The Missouri Mavericks will begin their third season in the Central Hockey League this Friday, October 21 in Rio Grande Valley, and the home opener is Saturday, November 5 against the Wichita Thunder.
