Sacramento Holds off Tucson Monday

August 23, 2011 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Padres News Release

The Tucson Padres brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday but Jarrett Hoffpauir flied to left for the final out in Sacramento's 11-9 win. The Padres trailed 11-5 in the eighth when they scored two runs on Hoffpauir's RBI single and Pat McKenna's sacrifice fly. In the ninth, Luis Martinez drove home two more with his first triple of the season but the Padres comeback attempt fell short. Sacramento has now won the first three games of the series, and with Las Vegas losing in Fresno Monday, Sacramento's magic number to clinch their fifth straight division title is down to just one.

Hoffpauir was 3-for-5 with two doubles and Anthony Rizzo was 1-for-5 with a two-run single. Rizzo now has 97 RBIs in only 81 PCL games. Tucson starter Jon Leicester allowed eight runs, all earned, in 6.1 innings. Four of the runs were nearly avoided when the Padres almost turned a double play that would have ended the fifth and Sacramento added four runs with two outs later in the inning.

Sacramento has now taken an 8-7 lead in the season series against the Padres. Tucson has lost eight of its last ten and 30 of its last 42 games.

Next Game: Tuesday, 7:00 pm - Sacramento RHP Travis Banwart (6-9, 5.03) vs. Tucson RHP Matt Buschmann (5-4, 7.81). KRAFT Singles Tuesday Night Tickets - buy one ticket, get one free with purchase. Also, Arizona Daily Star Two-for-One Ticket Night.
