Lakewood Takes Opener From Delmarva

SALISBURY, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws (30-26) won the series opener against the Delmarva Shorebirds (20-37) by a final score of 4-2 on Monday night. Good starting pitching, 3 shutout innings of relief, and some timely hitting was the recipe for the win for Lakewood. The BlueClaws have now won 2 straight games, as they are trying to earn their way back to the postseason here in 2011.

In the series opener, Lakewood got a very nice start from righty Lisalberto Bonilla who earned his 4th win of the year. He pitched 6 nice innings, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits to even up his record at 4-4. Lendy Castillo threw 2 innings of relief allowing 1 unearned run, and then Ryan Duke and Jay Johnson combined to pitch the 9th and close it out for Lakewood. Johnson earned his 5th save of the season. Duke exited the game with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd in the 9th inning with an undisclosed injury. No word on Duke's status.

Zach Collier had a really nice game for Lakewood going 2-4 with 2 RBI's and a run scored. Collier scored on a stolen base of home on a double steal in the 5th inning. Carlos Alonso was 2-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored as well for the BlueClaws. Lakewood improves to 15-7 on the year against Delmarva.

Tuesday the 2 teams will play game 2 of their 4 game series. LHP Ervis Manzanillo (7-6, 5.40 ERA) will start for Lakewood, and LHP Matt Bywater (0-2, 3.92 ERA) will throw for Delmarva. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm on Tuesday.
