Schafer Perfect as RedHawks Take Thriller, 11-10

Des Moines, Iowa - In his fourth rehab start with the RedHawks, Astros outfielder Jordan Schafer went 5-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases leading the Oklahoma City RedHawks (59-69) to an 11-10 win over the Iowa Cubs (59-69) before 10,013 Saturday night at Principal Park.

Schafer improved to 8-for-15 with three RBI in his first four games of a rehabilitation assignment for a left middle finger joint injury. Schafer is expected to start Sunday's 1:05 p.m. CT game for Oklahoma City.

RedHawks reliever Xavier Cedeno (2-2) picked up the winning decision with a scoreless sixth inning. Iowa reliever Carlton Smith (0-1) was charged with six runs of a seven-run seventh inning for the losing decision. Juan Abreu (3) saved the game with one unearned run over one and one-thirds innings.

The teams traded first inning runs. Jordan Schafer doubled off the right-centerfield wall, moved to third base on a groundout and scored on a Nick Struck wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning Brett Jackson hit a first pitch, leadoff double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a Bryan LaHair sacrifice fly.

Iowa gained a 4-1 lead with a three-run third inning, using RBI singles from Bryan LaHair and Scott Moore and a sacrifice fly from D.J. LeMahieu for the lead.

The RedHawks scored two runs in the sixth inning on a Schafer single and Chris Johnson double play ground ball to cut the Iowa lead to 4-3.

Oklahoma City stormed ahead in the seventh inning. Drew Locke singled in the first run for a 4-4 tie. Durango next drove in a run on a fielder's choice for a 5-4 lead. Schafer added another RBI single for a 6-4 advantage, and Brett Wallace singled in Durango for a 7-4 game. Jake Goebbert capped off the inning with a three-run home run to right field for a 10-4 RedHawks lead.

Iowa started a rally with a five-run eighth inning against reliever Douglas Arguello. Ryan Flaherty singled in Scott Moore for a 10-5 game. With bases loaded, Matt Spencer hit a pinch-hit grand slam home run to right field for a 10-9 score.

The RedHawks added an insurance run in the ninth inning. Schafer reached on an infield single, stole second and third base on consecutive pitches and scored on a Goebbert single for an 11-9 game.

Iowa plated one run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Chris Robinson sacrifice fly, but left the tying run at second base.
