Jeff Bes New Surge Coach

August 11, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Mississippi Surge News Release

The Mississippi Surge has named Jeff Bes the team's new head coach. Bes begins his duties immediately.

Bes comes to the coaching ranks after completing a highly decorated playing career, including the past eight seasons as the player/assistant coach for the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League.

"We're excited to have a guy of Jeff's background ready and eager to start his coaching career with us," Surge owner Tim Kerr said. "His record of success on the ice speaks for itself and he's enthusiastic about getting started and getting involved in all aspects of our operation. He'll start recruiting and talking with players right away.

"Once he gets settled, Jeff is going to be very visible in the community and helping out with the youth hockey and everything he can, to make the Surge successful on the ice and in the community," Kerr said.

Bes helped lead the Bucks to the CHL championship in 2004 and 2006, and two other appearances in the CHL finals. He earned the CHL Most Valuable Player award in 2003-04 and 2007-08 and was the playoff MVP in 2006. The former third round draft choice of the Minnesota North Stars (58th overall in 1992 National Hockey League Entry Draft) looks forward to stepping off the ice and behind the bench.

"The Surge obviously has a great championship tradition and that is something I want to continue," Bes said. "I'm looking forward to getting there and meeting the fans, sponsors, and getting involved in the youth hockey community."

While Bes is beginning the recruiting process now, he expects to be relocated to the Gulf Coast by the end of the month. The Surge will announce a meet and greet with him, once he moves to Mississippi.

Season tickets for the 2011-12 Surge season are on sale now, with plans starting for less than $10 per game. For more information call the Surge at 228-287-PUCK (7825).
