Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

Corpus Christi (17-22, 42-67) @ San Antonio (24-15, 73-36)

Pedro Hernandez and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout while Sawyer Carroll drove in four runs in San Antonio's 7-0 win over the Hooks last night. Hernandez (1-0) earned his first Missions win and his eighth overall victory this year by blanking the Hooks over six frames. Eddie Kunz, Colt Hynes and Craig Italiano retired nine of 10 down the stretch without giving up a hit to keep the Hooks off the board.

Carroll's 3-for-3 evening included his 13th home run of the year and a walk. Jaff Decker checked in with a single, a double and two RBIs in five at-bats.

The Hooks have suffered back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season and are 0-10 at Wolff Municipal Stadium.

Tonight's Matchup:

RHP Paul Clemens (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Joe Wieland (4-0, 1.23)

Clemens, acquired by the Astros along with two other pitchers and outfielder Jordan Schafer in the deal that sent outfielder Michael Bourn to Atlanta, makes his Hooks debut here tonight. Clemens has spent the entire season with the Mississippi Braves of the AA Southern League, where in 20 starts he was 6-5 with a 3.73 ERA and a South Division All-Star. His most recent outing came last Wednesday (8 days ago) at home against Mobile (6.2-2-1-0-4-4). Despite his solid effort, Clemens was saddled with a no-decision in Mississippi's 2-1 loss. Originally a seventh-round selection of the Braves in the 2008 draft out of Louisburg (NC) Junior College, Clemens split his time last season between Rome in the South Atlantic League and Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League, going a combined 2-4 with 3 saves and a 3.23 ERA in 35 games and eight starts.

· In 108.2 innings this season has allowed 103 hits and 44 walks with 93 strikeouts

· Has 8 quality starts this year and 14 starts with 2 or fewer earned runs allowed

· Was 3-0 with a 1.90 ERA in his first 7 starts (3-5, 4.91 in 13 starts since)

Wieland, acquired by the Padres along with LHP Robbie Erlin in the deal that made RHP Mike Adams a Texas Ranger, makes his San Antonio debut tonight - six days after hurling a no-hitter in this ballpark against his new teammates. Wieland issued just one walk during the no-hitter and faced the minimum while throwing 109 pitches. He has not given up a run in his last 16 innings of work, which includes six shutout frames in a 2-1 win over the Hooks July 24 at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Wieland has allowed just two runs in his last four starts (3-0, 0.64 ERA) and has two wins and a 0.56 ERA in two starts at Wolff Municipal Stadium. He's held Texas League foes to no runs or one run in six of his seven starts.

· Overall this year is 10-3 with a 1.80 ERA, with 15 walks and 132 strikeouts in 129.2 innings

· Leads the Rangers farm system in wins, ERA and Ks, and is second among all full-season minor leaguers in ERA

· Was the starting pitcher for the Carolina League in the June 21 All-Star Game vs. the California League

· Originally a fourth-round pick of the Rangers in 2008 out of Bishop Manogue High School in Reno, Nevada

Keuchel to AAA

The man with the most wins in a single season for the Hooks over the past two years has received the call to AAA Oklahoma City. Tulsa native Dallas Keuchel is slated to start tonight for the RedHawks in their game at Las Vegas. In 20 starts this year for the Hooks, Keuchel is 9-7 with a 3.17 ERA. He departs ranked second in the Texas League in innings pitched (127.2) and third in WHIP (1.12). Keuchel is also ranked fourth in the circuit in both ERA and opponents' batting average (.244).

Keuchel's nine wins is the most for any Hooks pitcher since Sergio Perez won 11 games in 2009.

Sutil returns

Returning to the Hooks today from Oklahoma City is shortstop Wladimir Sutil, who began the season with Corpus Christi. In 31 games since June 9 with the RedHawks, Sutil batted .222 (14x63) with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

In 48 games this year with the Hooks, Sutil is hitting .295 with 8 doubles, 2 HRs, 13 RBIs and 13 steals. Sutil is the Hooks all-time leader in games (340), at-bats (1,235) and hits (338) and ranks second in club history in runs (177) and stolen bases (69). Sutil needs to score seven more runs to pass Drew Sutton for the all-time franchise lead in that statistic.

Alamo City donut

The ingredients for a Hooks win in San Antonio have not yet come together this season. Corpus Christi stands 0-10 in this facility in 2011, and the Hooks have been outscored in these 10 games 60-14. Lifetime, the Hooks are 31-61 at Wolff Municipal Stadium.

Entering play tonight, the Hooks have gone 28 consecutive innings without scoring a run in this ballpark. The Hooks have been blanked in four of the last five games here by the Missions, and those four shutouts are the last four shutouts suffered by the club. The Hooks have failed to score seven times this season.
