Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers open their busiest month of the regular season Wednesday as they play host to the Western Conference-leading LA Galaxy at JELD-WEN Field live on ESPN2 at 7:30 p.m. (PT). Portland then travels to face the San Jose Earthquake in a road tilt Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (PT).
In addition to the telecast on ESPN2, Wednesday's match against the Galaxy will be broadcast locally on 750 AM The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940 AM.
Saturday's match will be broadcast live on KPTV FOX 12 and in Spanish on estrellaTV, with radio broadcasts on The Game and La Pantera.
The Timbers play seven league matches during the month of August - more than in any other month of their inaugural MLS season. Saturday's game in San Jose kicks off a stretch of three straight on the road, matching the club's season-high for consecutive road games during the 2011 campaign.
Coming off a 2-2 draw against Toronto FC last weekend, the Timbers (6-10-4, 22pts) face the Galaxy for the second time this season. In their previous meeting, Landon Donovan scored twice in a 3-0 win for the Galaxy at The Home Depot Center on April 23. The Galaxy enter the contest on an MLS-best, 14-game unbeaten streak (8-0-6) and occupy the top spot in the Western Conference, with the league's best record at 12-2-9 (45 pts).
Portland and San Jose (5-8-9, 24pts) square off for the first time in regular-season play on Saturday. Earlier in the season, the Timbers and Earthquakes met in a second-round, U.S. Open Cup play-in match at JELD-WEN Field on May 3. San Jose earned a 1-0 win in overtime on a goal by Ike Opara in the 120th minute. The return match in the regular-season series will be played in Portland on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
On Sunday, the Timbers Reserves kick off the second half of the MLS Reserve League season as they visit the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves at San Jose's Nutrilite Training Facility at 11 a.m. Portland (2-2-1, 7pts) is unbeaten in its last two MLS Reserve League matches, including a 2-1 victory over the Earthquakes Reserves on June 21.
Timbers-LA Galaxy kickoff at 7:30 p.m. (PT) at JELD-WEN Field
A reminder that kickoff for the Timbers' home match against the LA Galaxy at JELD-WEN Field on Wednesday has been moved to a 7:30 p.m. (PT).
The match will be aired live on ESPN2, with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940 AM.
Timbers to wear Rose City red kits Wednesday against LA Galaxy
Before a national TV audience, the Timbers will wear their "Rose City" kits on Wednesday against the LA Galaxy. Wednesday's match will mark the third time in league play that the team as worn the secondary kit this season.
The "Rose City" jersey features a split design of two shades of red, separated by "Rose City" thorns repeated down the middle, and Alaska Airlines script across the chest. Highlights of the jersey include "Rose City" verbiage on the back of the neck and the Rose City logo prominently displayed opposite the team's primary crest on the front of the jersey.
Fans can purchase "Rose City" red kits, as well as other items in the "Rose City" apparel line, at the adidas Timbers Team Store at JELD-WEN Field in downtown Portland or online at shop.portlandtimbers.com.
Join Timbers fans at Maher's Irish Pub to watch Saturday's road match against San Jose
Fans are invited to join the Timbers' official viewing party Saturday to watch the club take on the San Jose Earthquakes at Maher's Irish Pub in Lake Oswego, Ore., at 7:30 p.m. (PT), presented by ROOT SPORTS and Budweiser. Saturday's viewing party is open to fans of all ages.
Maher's Irish Pub, located at 352 B Ave. in Lake Oswego, is one of several local pubs and restaurants featured with the club's pub partner program in 2011. Fans will be able enjoy the match, enter to win tickets to an upcoming game at JELD-WEN Field or Timbers apparel and visit with NASL Timbers standout Jimmy Kelly.
Eddie Johnson's first MLS goal up for MLS Goal of the Week
Forward Eddie Johnson scored his first MLS goal in last weekend's 2-2 draw against Toronto FC at JELD-WEN Field. His strike in the 23rd minute is one of five nominees for the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week for Week 20. Johnson is the fourth Timbers player to have a goal this season nominated for MLS Goal of the Week.
Help design Jack Jewsbury's custom captain's armband
Through a special contest, the Timbers are asking fans to help design a Timbers-branded captain's armband that will be worn by captain Jack Jewsbury for the remainder of the 2011 season. Fans may submit designs that will be worn with the primary (green) kit or the secondary ("Rose City" red) kit using the guidance of a downloadable template. Jewsbury and the Timbers soccer staff with then select the two corresponding winning designs; all entries must be submitted by Thursday, Aug. 11 by 5 p.m. (PT).
Timbers sellout 11th consecutive regular-season home match at JELD-WEN Field
A passionate crowd of 18,627 was on hand for the Timbers' matchup against Toronto FC on July 30, marking the club's 11th straight sellout for a regular-season match at JELD-WEN Field. Through 11 league games in their inaugural MLS season, the Timbers have drawn nearly 205,000 fans and have sold out every league home game.
Timbers Reserves open second half of MLS Reserves League schedule Sunday
On a two-match unbeaten run, the Timbers Reserves open the second half of their MLS Reserve League season on Sunday as they visit the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves at San Jose's Nutrilite Training Facility at 11 a.m.
With a 2-1-1 (7pts) record in the West Division, the Timbers Reserves face the Earthquakes Reserves, LA Galaxy Reserves, Chivas USA Reserves and Vancouver Whitecaps FC Reserves to close out their MLS Reserve League campaign. The top eight teams in the MLS Reserve League will advance to the postseason to contend for the 2011 MLS Reserve League championship.
Eugene, Ore., family bikes 114 miles to watch the Timbers face Toronto FC
Eugene-based web developer Paul Adkins, his wife and four kids took to the road last Tuesday in order to watch the Timbers play Toronto FC on Saturday. Why so early? The Adkins family was traveling the entire 100-mile trip by bicycle.
The Adkins family doesn't own a vehicle, or a TV, but once they discovered the Timbers online and watched a few games the kids insisted on going to Portland to watch the team play.
After camping and being helped out by other cyclists on their journey, the family arrived in time for the match and returned home happy via Amtrak.
Timbers U-23s land two on PDL's All-Western Conference Team
The Timbers' development team, the Timbers U-23s, landed two players - defender Ryan Kawulok and forward Brent Richards - on the Premier Development League's 2011 All-Western Conference Team, it was announced Monday by United Soccer Leagues.
Kawulok and Richards each earned PDL all-conference honors for a second straight season. The PDL's four all-conference teams were selected through a vote of team management.
Timbers' Corporate Cup crowns its champions, raises $10,000 for Portalnd YouthBuilders
Prior to the match against Toronto FC last weekend, the Timbers and JELD-WEN Field played host to the championship matches of the club's 2011 Corporate Cup.
In the co-ed bracket, Tursi's defeated Nike to take home the crown, while Nike beat UPS to win it all on the men's side. The Timbers' first Corporate Cup included 10 different teams from different companies throughout the Northwest, raising $10,000 for Timbers' pillar partner Portland YouthBuilders.
Providence, Timbers see sold-out JELD-WEN Field do 'Pink Glove Dance'
In an effort to build breast cancer awareness, the Timbers and Providence led 18,627 fans at a sold-out JELD-WEN Field in the "Pink Glove Dance" during halftime of the club's exhibition match against Club Atlético Independiente on July 26. The event was recorded and submitted to Guinness World Records, aiming to set the world record for "most soccer fans wearing pink gloves."
