Winnipeg, MB. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have learned that former captain Shayne Wiebe has signed an American hockey League contract with the Winnipeg Jets.
The 21-year old Brandon product, who signed an amateur tryout contract and played one game with the AHL's Connecticut Whale last spring, finsihed in a tie for seventh place in the Western Hockey League last season with 44 goals and 65 points in 72 games.
A former member of the Kamloops Blazers, Wiebe was acquired by the Wheat Kings in December 2009 and helped lead Brandon to the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship Final.
During his 4-year WHL career, Wiebe scored 108 goals and 197 points in 276 games.
In 29 career playoff games, he scored six goals and 21 points.
An eighth round draft choice of the Blazers in the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft, Wiebe is a former member of the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings.
Winnipeg's AHL affiliate will be located this season in St. John's, Newfoundland.
