 Inland Empire 66ers

66ers Win in 12

July 19, 2011 - California League (CalL1)
Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Jose, CA- Michael Wing's double off the wall in left in the 12th inning won an emotionally charged game for the Inland Empire 66ers 6-4 over of the San Jose Giants (64-30, 14-11). With the win, if the season were to end today Inland Empire (43-52, 11-14) would be in the playoffs as the Wild Card from the South.

Inland Empire was trying to become the only team in the California League with a winning record against the two time defending champion Giants, and the appeared well on their way to accomplishing that task when they moved ahead in the middle innings. After being no hit through four innings the 66ers pounced on their first scoring opportunity when Michael Wing and Kole Calhoun each delivered two out-run scoring hits in the fifth to put the team ahead 3-2.

An insurance run came in the sixth on a two out double by Rian Kiniry to double the lead to two, and the bullpen breezed through the sixth, seventh and eighth with Caleb Graham and Eric Cendejas combining for three straight 1-2-3 frames.

In the ninth the 66ers called on closer Matt Oye, but the right hander's one mistake of the night turned out to be a two run home run to even the score at four. Oye did recover however, allowing only one other hard hit ball on the night. It came with Giants speedster Gary Brown at third with two out in the 10th and could have ended the game were it not for a sensational leaping catch by first baseman Eric Oliver.

Still tied in the 12th, Inland Empire had the top of the order due up, and they jumped all over the Giants. A walk to Matt Long was followed by Wing's bullet to left field. Manager Damon Mashore decided to wave Long all the way around from first on the double and Long slid in ahead of the relay throw to score the game winner. Wing advanced to third on the throw and eventually came in on an Eric Oliver sac fly. Kevin Nabors recorded the final three outs for his first save of the year.

The 66ers will return home Wednesday night to host Lake Elsinore in game one of a three game series. The first pitch is set for 7:05 pm and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians pre-game show begins at 6:55 pm on AM 1050 KCAA.
