 Inland Empire 66ers

66ers Post Eight in The First on Route to A Series Win

July 16, 2011 - California League (CalL1)
Inland Empire 66ers News Release

Modesto, CA-Inland Empire erupted for an eight run first inning on the way to a 12-10 victory over the Modesto Nuts (43-49, 10-12). The 66ers (41-41, 9-13) are now one game back in the southern division wild card race.

After a 12 inning contest the night before, the 66ers came to the ballpark looking for a nice long outing from starter Manuel Flores, but it was the offense that took control of the game from the start. A pair of Nuts errors helped the cause, but it was Casey Haerther, Carlos Ramirez and Steven Irvine who delivered RBI hits against Nuts starter Parker Frazier to get the ball rolling.

Modesto was forced to pull the starter before the first inning came to a close, but that did not stop the 66ers onslaught. With the bases loaded Matt Long hit his league leading 10th triple of the year to put the 66ers up 8-0. Long is now tied for the fourth most triples in a single season in team history, and the ninth most for any 66er in his career.

Inland Empire still had plenty left in the tank and pounced on Modesto again in the fourth. The first four batters of the inning all reached safely including Casey Haerther who plated a run with his 30th double of the season. The biggest blow of the inning came one batter later when Carlos Ramirez delivered a three run home run to make it a 12-0 66ers lead.

Meanwhile on the mound, Manuel Flores was after his third consecutive quality start and early on appeared to be well on his way to it. Flores breezed through the first five innings of the game, facing just three over the minimum.

The Nuts made a big run at the 66ers in the final few frames but with the tying run aboard in the ninth Matt Oye was able to get Beau Seabury to bounce out to the mound to wrap up the 66ers ninth win in their last 13 games.

Inland Empire now moves on to San Jose to visit the reigning California League champion San Jose Giants. The first pitch is set for 6:00 pm and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians pre-game show begins at 5:50 pm on AM 1050 KCAA. The 66ers return home Wednesday, July 20th for a three game homestand. Group tickets are still available, for more information on 66ers tickets or to schedule your next fun filled group outing, contact the 66ers front office at (909)888-9922.
