HOME SWEET HOME: The Pelicans are finally back in Myrtle Beach after a ten-game odyssey that took them up to Lynchburg, down to Winston-Salem and all the way back up to Wilmington. It's their longest trek since 2009, when they went 2-8 during a ten-gamer from May 4-14 (at Lynchburg, Kinston and Frederick). Later that season, there was another ten-day, three-city road trip that took them to Wilmington, Winston-Salem and Potomac, but rainouts trimmed the trip to only nine games. The Birds will be happy to return to BB&T Coastal Field, where they enjoy the Carolina League's best home record (26-12, .684). Starting tonight, 21 of their next 27 games will be played at home.
BAD TRIP: The Pelicans struggled in their ten-game road trip, going 3-7 and winning only one game in each series against the Hillcats, Dash and Blue Rocks. The main culprit during the slump has been the sputtering offense as the Birds plated only 17 runs in the seven defeats. The bats have had a particularly hard time in the last five games, as they've only hit .224 as a team. Several hitters that had been scorching the ball have fallen into slides simultaneously. Leading hitter Ryan Strausborger is in a 7-for-40 slump (.175), Santiago Chirino is 3-for-16 (.188) and both Jared Hoying and Vinny DiFazio are 2-for-16 (.125).
IT'S NOT ALL SO BAD: While the offense as a whole has struggled of late, a few Pelicans are still producing. Zach Zaneski is riding a 13-game hitting streak that began when he went 2-for-10 while catching all 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. During the stretch, "Z" is betting .305 (18-59). Jared Bolden and Andres James are both on 10-for-26 runs (.385) and Travis Adair was 9-for-26 (.346) before a Monday 0-fer snapped his six-game hit streak.
