Loons Soar Past Lansing, 10-3

MIDLAND, MI - For the second night in a row, the Loons scored multiple runs in the first inning, which set a pace for the visiting Lansing Lugnuts that proved too much as the Loons eventually won10-3 Friday night before 4,804 fans at Dow Diamond.
First baseman Chris Jacobs hit a single to left field to score the first run for the Loons. On the play, Loons shortstop Christian Lara advanced from second and charged home as the ball was being thrown home from left. As Lara slid home to score the initial run, his right foot twisted underneath him awkwardly. Lara had to be carted off the field and was substituted by Bryant Hernandez.
In the same inning, Steve Domecus hit a single to right to load the bases, setting up outfielder Jon Garcia with a broken bat groundout to score Bobby Coyle. Finally, a double from catcher Michael Pericht cleared the bases to give the Loons the 4-0 advantage.
In the sixth inning, Garcia sent Lansing starter Casey Lawrence's last pitch out of the ballpark and onto Buttles to make it 6-0. The homer was Garcia's 13th, which ranks third-most among Midwest League batters.
The Loons made their last attack in the eighth inning, which began with a crafty move on the bases. Speedster Casio Grider was hit by pitch to get on base and stole second during the Leon Landry's plate appearance. Landry hit into a groundout to the pitcher, who tossed it to first for the put out but was unable to hold Grider at second. Lansing first baseman tried to throw back to third to catch Grider, but his toss sailed high, scoring Grider on the error.
With two outs, Hernandez struck out, but he reached first on a wild pitch, forcing the Lugnuts to need four outs to finish the inning, which did not happen until Jacobs blasted a three-run homer to give the Loons multiple digits in the runs column.
Starting for the Loons was Garrett Gould, who limited the Lugnuts to three runs on five hits across seven innings of work. The righty twirled seven strikeouts and issued no walks to pick up his league-leading eighth win of the year. Ryan Acosta finished the game for the Loons with two hitless innings to notch his first save.
The Loons will conclude their six-game homestand Saturday night at Dow Diamond, looking to sweep the Lansing Lugnuts. Starting on the hill for the Loons will be LHP Ryan Christenson (6-5, 4.24) against Lansing's LHP John Anderson (1-0, 0.00). The game will be followed by a Fireworks Loontacular powered by Dow Corning. The fireworks show will be preceded by the MBS Ball Launch, where fans throw tennis balls at a target on the field for the chance to win a $400 ticket voucher to MBS Airport.
