Lemahieu Optioned to Iowa; Mateo Recalled

The Chicago Cubs optioned infielder D.J. LeMahieu to Iowa and recalled relief pitcher Marcos Mateo in roster moves announced last Tuesday. In a separate move on Wednesday, Darwin Barney was activated from the disabled list and rejoined Chicago.

In 23 games with Chicago, LeMahieu batted .243 (9-for-37) with one double and one RBI. He was called up to the Cubs on May 30 after starting the season in Double-A with the Tennessee Smokies. In 50 games with Tennessee, LeMahieu hit .358 with 15 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 27 RBI. The Visalia, Calif. native was one of 12 Smokies to be named to the 2011 Southern League All-Star Game.

Prior to this season, LeMahieu split 2009 between the AZL Cubs and Peoria and played all of the 2010 campaign with Daytona. A former Louisiana State University player, he was drafted by Chicago in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.

This is Mateo's second stint with Chicago. He began the season with the Cubs before being optioned to Iowa on May 17. In 20 appearances with Chicago, Mateo was 1-1 with a 5.74 ERA. With Iowa, the right-hander was was 1-3 with two saves and a 6.87 ERA in 16 games.
