Corpus Christi, TX - In a game that didn't have any meaning in the standings or playoff landscape, the Hammerheads (7-5) found the motivation of an early season blowout loss enough to inspire them to a 70-30 win over the Abilene Ruff Riders (4-8).
Coming into the game Corpus Christi had already clinched the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs and a third meeting with the Louisiana Swashbucklers on June 18th. However, the Hammerheads player had not forgotten about the embarrassing 83-27 defeat they suffered in game one of the season in Abilene. Using that as motivation Corpus Christi clearly played their best game of the season with both the offensive and defensive units clicking on all cylinders.
"I felt like we finally played a 60 minute game", said Hammerheads Head Coach Dustin Almond. "There are still some things we need to work on and polish up but we're heading into the post season on a two game win streak and we're feeling confident about next week".
For the first time all season the Hammerheads committed no turnovers in a game. Corpus Christi QB Anthony Andre, the SIFL's Offensive Player of the Week last week, went 17-25-0 for 194 yards and 5 TD's in 3 plus quarters of action. The Hammerheads defense was sparked by it's star player Deandre Fillmore who had 4 sacks, a safety, a forced fumble to go along with 6.5 tackles. Fillmore also rushed for two 2-point conversions and passed for a third.
Corpus Christi now prepares to head to Lake Charles, LA to take on the Louisiana Swashbucklers (8-4) in the first round of the playoffs this coming Saturday. The Swashbucklers have lost two in a row coming into the game dropping a tough decision to Houston 40-38 this past weekend and losing to Corpus Christi 62-51 the week prior. Kickoff is set for 7pm on Saturday. The game can be heard locally on Sports Radio Corpus Christi, 1230am, beginning at 6:40pm.
