Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) -- The Reading Phillies game on Thursday began in a rain delay - it ended with a series win.

Ryan Edell (5-1, 3.50) tossed a season-high 7.2 innings, Tim Kennelly launched a two-run home go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and the R-Phils thumped the Trenton Thunder 4-1 in the finale of their four-game set to win the series against Trenton, who began the day in first place.

A native of Boston, MA, Edell, 27, won for the first time at home this season, and was solid in his longest outing of the year. The R-Phils lefty pitched into the eighth inning and allowed just one run on five hits to earn the victory. He walked none, fanned six, and won for the second time over his last three starts.

Reading (32-27) trailed 1-0 after six innings, but quickly turned things around in the seventh frame. Trenton starter Dellin Betances was outstanding over six innings, but did not come back for the seventh. Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte (0-2, 3.32) started the inning and struggled.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, second baseman Niuman Romero ripped a single to center field to get Reading started. Next batter Tim Kennelly, who got the start behind the plate, became an instant hero. Kennelly, an Australian native, launched the first pitch he saw from Venditte over the left field wall - putting Reading on top 2-1. It was his first home run of the season.

Now, with Reading ahead, Edell came back for the eighth and was still sharp. He faced two batters in the inning and got both out, before giving way to reliever Justin De Fratus, who would shut the door. A member of the Phillies 40-man roster, De Fratus got the final four outs to notch his team-high sixth save of the season. He fanned two batters and walked just one and has not allowed a run over his last five appearances (9.2 innings) - lowering his ERA to 1.97 on the season.

The R-Phils added two insurances runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, courtesy of back-to-back home runs from Matt Rizzotti and Cody Overbeck. Overbeck added to his Eastern League lead in home runs (17) and RBIs (44). Rizzotti now has 11 home runs and 40 RBIs on the season. He's second in the E.L. in RBIs.

Betances, a native of New York, allowed just three hits over six innings and did not factor in the decision. He walked one and fanned eight batters.

The R-Phils will now face the Altoona Curve for an exciting three-game series beginning on Friday. Reading will send RHP B.J. Rosenberg (0-1, 1.87) to the hill in the opener. Altoona has not yet named their starter for Friday's game.
