Memorial Cup Update

May 26, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) - Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

The round robin portion of the 2011 Mastercard Memorial Cup has been completed, and the road to the trophy is now set.

The tournament began on Friday, as the host Mississauga St. Michael's Majors welcomed the Saint John Sea Dogs to Hershey Centre. The Sea Dogs' Tomas Jurco needed just 1:44 to start the scoring in a first period that featured two goals for each team (Jurco and Huberdeau for SJ, Cizikas and Smith-Pelly for MISS). Saint John broke the 2-2 deadlock at the 6:58 mark of the second period, as Michael Kirkpatrick found the twine with a power play marker. Eight minutes into the third, Saint John added to their lead on a power play goal by Nathan Beaulieu, before Cizikis responded with his second of the game for the Majors. A 24-save effort by Jacob DeSerres kept Mississauga at bay, defeating JP Anderson, who stopped 27 of the 31 shots he faced. The Sea Dogs won the opening game, 4-3.

The other two teams opened their tournaments on Saturday night, as the Owen Sound Attack and Kootenay Ice clashed in round robin play. Robby Mignardi's first period tally and Roman Berdnikov's second period goal gave the Attack a 2-0 lead, in what at the time was a close game. However, in the final eight minutes of the contest, Owen Sound blew things open, as Mignardi, Andrew Fritsch, and Garrett Wilson led the OHL champions to a 5-0 victory. Jordan Binnington pitched the shutout with 29 saves for the Attack, while Nathan Lieuwen turned aside 28 of 33 shots for Kootenay.

The Ice didn't have much time to rest, as they took the ice on Sunday against the Majors. Both teams tallied in the first period, as Kootenay's Cody Eakin opened the scoring at 7:55, before Maxim Kitsyn answered 1:23 later for Mississauga. The score remained tied until the 11:51 mark of the third period, when Rob Flick put the Majors in the lead on a goal from Devante Smith-Pelly and Riley Brace. JP Anderson made the 2-1 score stand up, denying 32 of 33 Kootenay attempts, defeating Nathan Lieuwen, who made 32 saves on 34 shots.

The Sea Dogs returned to the ice on Monday for a battle of 1-1 teams, as they faced Owen Sound. The Attack got out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Matt Petgrave and Andrew Shaw. The always resilient Sea Dogs weren't about to go down easily, as Stanislav Galiev put the QMJHL champions on the board with 6:11 remaining in the middle frame. Late in the third period, Saint John evened the score, as Tomas Jurco netted his second goal of the tournament with 3:27 to go. The game remained all square into overtime. At the 17:35 mark of the extra session, Jonathan Huberdeau was the hero, hitting the back of the net with a wrist shot from the slot. Jacob DeSerres stood on his head with 47 saves for the Sea Dogs, edging out Jordan Binnington, who stopped 41 for the Attack.

Saint John also played on Tuesday, completing their round robin schedule with a match-up against the 0-2 Kootenay Ice. After a scoreless opening stanza, the Sea Dogs took a 2-0 lead in the second period on goals by Ryan Tesink and Tomas Jurco. Later in the frame, the Ice tied the score, as Drew Czerwonka and Kevin King lit the lamp. Jesse Ismond gave Kootenay their second lead of the tournament at the 23-second mark of the third period, only to see Kevin Gagne tie things up 1:47 later. The Ice regained the lead a little more than five minutes later on Matt Fraser's goal, and that lead held until the final minute of regulation. With 15 seconds to go, Zack Phillips took a wrist shot that deflected off of Tomas Jurco's head, dribbling into the net, sending the back-and-forth tilt into overtime. At the 3:55 mark of the extra session, Fraser kept the Kootenay season alive, slipping the winning goal into the back of the cage. Nathan Lieuwen made 19 saves in the win for the Ice, beating out Mathieu Corbeil-Theriault, who was forced to stop 40 of 45 shots for the Sea Dogs.

The final game of the tournament took place on Wednesday in a battle of OHL teams, as Mississauga faced Owen Sound in a rematch of their OHL Championship series. The Majors opened the scoring at the 8:01 mark of the first period on a goal by Jordan Mayer. The score stayed that way for 19:59, before Andrew Shaw tied things up for the Attack. Late in the second period, Mississauga retook the lead, as Rob Flick dented the twine on a power play goal from Brett Flemming and Michael D'Orazio. The Majors maintained their lead into the final minute of regulation, when Justin Shugg iced the victory with an empty net tally. Shots on goal were relatively low in game six, with JP Anderson needing just 21 saves to knock off Jordan Binnington, who stopped 25.

With the round robin portion completed, here is how the rest of the tournament will look. On Thursday night, the Owen Sound Attack and Kootenay Ice will play a tiebreaker game. The winner of that advances to Friday's semi-final, where they will face the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. Friday night's winner will advance to Sunday's championship game, where they will be greeted by the Saint John Sea Dogs. The games on Thursday and Sunday will be shown live on NHL Network, beginning at 7:00, while Friday's game will be shown on NHL Network on tape delay at 2:00 on Saturday.
